The Canadian coast is the only British territory on this station. The dock at Esquimalt will take the first-class cruisers, and present requirements do not appear to call for more.

* Level of water very variable, and ships may be detained waiting.

Should naval operations take place on the station, the want of docks might be severely folt. The Falkland Islands is, however, the only British territory, and from their position, whilst invaluable in certain phases of war, a dock would be scarcely used in peace time.
