VIOR-CHAIRMAN.

A county council may appoint annually a vice-chairman, and such vice-chair- man shall in the absence of the chairman of the county have all the powers of the chairman of the county, and in the event of there being a casual vacancy 18 in the office of chairman of the county, the vice-chairman shall be chairman of the county, but he shall hold his office only for such time as the chairman of the county would have held the same if no vacancy had occurred.

As to STATUS,

f any member of a council-

20 Holds any office or place of profit in the gift or disposal of the council; or Is concerned in or participates in the profit of any work done by order of

the council, or of any contract entered into by the council, such person shall cease to be a member of the council, and his office shall there- upon become vacant, subject to the exceptions following; (that is to my,)

(a.) A member of a council shall not vacate his office by reason of his being a shareholder in any incorporated company entering into any contract with or supplying any article by order of such council; and,

(¿.) A member of a council shall not vacate his office by reason of his being

interested in any sale or ¡case of any lands or any loan of money to such 30

council.

(c.) A member of a council shall not vacate his office by reason of his being interested in any newspaper in which any advertisement relating to the affairs of the council is inserted.

Nevertheless a member of a council shall not be entitled to vote in respect of any contract with or any supply of articles by order of the council when such 85 contract is entered into with or articles supplied by any company in which he
