INDIA.

The Legal Age lof Marriage in.

15.The Cabinet took note of a Memorandum circu-

lated by the Secretary of State for India (Paper

C.P.-243 (28)) covering a speech delivered in the

Madras Legislative Council on the 27th March by

Dr. (Mrs) S.M.Reddi in support of a Motion to raise

the legal age for marriage of boys and girls to

21 and 16 years respectively. The Secretary of

State commented in his Memorandum that this speech

gave authoritative support to many of the statements

in Miss Mayo's book "Mother India" which were most

hotly criticised, and reported that the Motion in

support of which Dr. Reddi spoke was carried in

the Madras Council and that the Government of India

had for some time been actively considering the

matter in consultation with the Provincial Govern-

ments and had just appointed a representative

Committee of men and women to advise them on the

best legislative course to adopt.
