WARNING STATEMENT ON KOREA
Memorandum by the Secretary of
State for Foreign Affairs
COPY NO. 64
In paragraph 3 of my memorandum C. (52) 54 of the 27th February I informed my colleagues of the arrangements which had been agreed with the United States Government for transmitting the text of the proposed warning statement to be issued after the signature of an armistice in Korea to the Secretary-General in a joint communication from the Permanent Representatives of the signatory Governments at United Nations Headquarters.
The proposal for a joint communication proved unacceptable to the South African Government. The Governments concerned have therefore agreed to a change of procedure: there will no no joint communication, but individual Governments will be free to inform the Secretary-General of their signature of the warning statement if they wish. Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom will wish to inform the Secretary-General, as they attach importance to associating the United Nations with the warning statement in this way.
The arrangements for signature of the warning statement remain as set out in my memorandum of 27th February.
