3. Japan renounces all rights, titles and claims to Korea, Formosa and the Pescadores; and also all rights, titles and claims in connexion with the mandate system or deriving from the activities of Japanese nationals in the Antarctic area. Japan accepts the action of the United Nations Security Council of 2nd April, 1947, in relation to extending the trusteeship system to Pacific Islands formerly under mandate to Japan.

4. The United States may propose to the United Nations to place under its trusteeship system, with the United States as the administering authority, the Ryukyu Íslands south of 29° north-latitude, the Bonin Islands, including Rosario Island, the Volcano Islands, Parece Vela and Marcus Island. Japan will concur in any such proposal. Pending the making of such a proposal and affirmative action thereon, the United States will have the right to exercise all and any powers of administration, legislation and jurisdiction over the territory and inhabitants of these islands, including their territorial waters.

5. Japan will return to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics the southern part of Sakhalin as well as all the islands adjacent to it and will hand over to the Soviet Union the Kurile Islands.

CHAPTER IV

Security

6. Japan accepts the obligations set forth in Article 2 of the Charter of the United Nations, and, in particular, obligations—

(a) to settle its international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security and justice are not endangered; (b) to refrain in its international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations;

(c) to give the United Nations every assistance in any action it takes in accor- dance with the charter and to refrain from giving assistance to any State against which the United Nations may take preventive or enforce- ment action.

of their professions.

(f) To support or to justify aggressive Japanese military action abroad.

Section II.-Position of Japanese Nationals who sympathised with or supported the act of the United Nations

ARTICLE 10

Japan shall not prosecute nor molest Japanese nationals solely on the ground that, during a period, 8th December, 1941, to the date of the coming into force of the present treaty, they expressed sympathy with or took action in support of the cause of the Allied and Associated Powers.

Section III.-Special Interests in China

ARTICLE 11

1. Japan renounces all benefits and privileges resulting from the provisions of the final protocol signed at Peking on 7th September, 1901, and from the annexes, notes and documents supplementary thereto, and agrees to the abrogation in respect of Japan, of the said protocol, annexes, notes and documents. Japan renounces likewise any claim to an indemnity under any of these provisions or instruments.

2. Japan agrees to the cancellation of all leases from the Chinese Government, in respect of all former Japanese concessions in China.

3. Japan renounces all Japanese rights respecting the International Settle- ments at Shanghai and Amoy.

4. In addition to those mentioned in the foregoing paragraphs, Japan hereby renounces all other special rights and interests in China.

Peace Treaties

Section IV-International Agreements

ARTICLE 12

Japan undertakes to recognise the full force of the treaties of peace with Italy, Roumania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Finland and other agreements or arrangements which have been or will be reached by the Allied and Associated Powers in respect of Austria and Germany for or in connexion with the restoration of peace.

League of Nations

ARTICLE 13

Japan undertakes to accept the arrangements which have been or may be made for the termination of the League of Nations and the former Permanent Court of International Justice.

Congo Basin Treaties

ARTICLE 14

Japan hereby renounces all rights, titles, interests and claims deriving from the conventions signed at St. Germain-en-Laye on 10th September, 1919.

Treaty of Lausanne

ARTICLE 15

Japan hereby renounces any rights and interests she may possess by virtue of article 16 of the Treaty of Lausanne signed on 24th July, 1923.

ARTICLE 16

Straits Agreement of Montreux
