CHAPTER IV.
Infantry carry 100 rounds per rifle in pouches, other branches 50 rounds.
The 1st Reserve small-arm ammunition, 100 rounds per rifle, will be in regimental charge.
The 2nd Reserve, 300 rounds per rifle, will be in Ordnance charge in the field magazine.
Gun reserve ammunition will be stored in the batteries, and that for the movable armament in the field magazine.
9. Ration Sub-Depot. The ration sub-depôt will be established at a go-down of the Sugar Refining Company. Rations will be distributed to the forts by coolie labour, and to the troops at Mount Parker by means of the aërial train.
10. Field Magazine. The field magazine will be formed at the same place as the ration sub-depôt, and ammunition distributed in the same manner as rations.
11. Dressing Station. The dressing station will be established at the office of the R.E. foreman of works, near Lyemun Pier. Mild cases will be treated here, more serious cases being sent, in the case of British troops to the Victoria Base Hospital, and in the case of native troops to the Kowloon Base Hospital, as the medical officer directs.
12. Modes of Attack.-The more probable forms of attack on this section are
(1.) By the guns of an enemy's cruizers endeavouring to silence the forts by
shell fire.
(2.) By a raid of torpedo boats endeavouring to effect an entrance into the harbour and destroying the lights and the Brennan torpedo installation.
(3.) By a landing of troops, in combination with (1) on the eastern shores of the island, and an occupation of the hill in the neighbourhood of Pottinger Peak.
(4.) By a landing of troops in Tytam Bay and an assault on Mount Parker, and "turning "the batteries from this direction.
To gain early information of an intended attack, patrols and scouts must be pushed out by the various outposts to all the probable landing places, for which purpose they are well situated. The infantry reserve can also be utilized.
13. Works. The following works will require construction on mobilization by the infantry, supplemented by coolie labour, and supervised by the R.E.
(1.) Epaulement for howitzers on south spur of Mount Parker.
(2.) The cutting of a road from Quarry Bay Gap along the western spur of Mount Parker to the summit, thence along the southern spur for the movement of the howitzers into position.
3.) Shelter trenches for the infantry outposts.
(4.) Crowning of parapets with sand bags in the forts (performed by the R.A.). 14. Camp Equipment, Ammunition, and Intrenching Tools.--
