Stonecutters Island being kept almost entirely on the passage north of that island, and it only makes me think more how necessary two search-lights are on that island.

The night was dark, but very clear and starlight.

I consider that as the lights are at present a boat ought to be able to get through the mid-channel passage if the two search-lights can only be attracted off. The fixed beams I do not think are very good.

The attack was represented by torpedo-boats :---

For the defence were mobilized the artillery garrisons of:--

Endeavour to enter the harbour by either entrance

This was the first occasion since I have been here that we have had the advantage of the assistance of the Navy, and that anything approaching to Service conditions have been observed.

No. 37 discovered at 7·50′, and entered fixed beam and came under fire of Q.F. and R.M.L. guns, firing special case, at 7:52', range from 300 yards.

No. 20 discovered by Belchers search-light 6'16′, about 1,800 yards distant, and in fixed beam and under fire of Q.F. guns 8°20′ - 8′22′. range 1,600-1,400 yards. Also discovered by Stonecutters search-light at 7:58′ near Hav-i-chao; engaged at 8'8', and in fixed beam 8.25′ 8.32′ (?), range 1,800-2,200 yards.

No. 38 discovered by Stonecutters search-light at 8'11'; in fixed beam (N.) and under fire of Q.F. guns 8°20′ 8.28' (?), range 1,700-1,000 yards.
