The number of trips cannot be laid down exactly, but it is generally found most convenient to sling three groups and embark two others with tripping chains and sinkers on the " Solent," and to sling two and embark one on the "Miner.' The mines which have been embarked are slung in the mine-fields.

The distribution of officers and men for the first day of laying the mines is shown in Table E (i). When the alignments have been put up and the mines of No. IV mine-field and the observation mines of No. III mine-field have been laid the align- ment and observing station parties join the priming and connecting-up parties. All hands are permanently detailed for their defence duties, and are kept well instructed in them.
9. The Divisional Officer Submarine Mining will act as Staff Officer for Submarine Mining; he will visit the various posts as may be necessary, and will be responsible for all arrangements being complete and in working order.
In case of an attack he will proceed at once to the point where his services are most required.
