It seems that actual practical experience given to the Officer Commanding and the garrisons is the gist of the matter, and that it would be almost a deception, and certainly mere academic theory, to issue written orders which fall far short in useful- ness when compared with actual experience.
Besides the practical work on the ground. the configuration of which shows clearly the best positions of outposts and for the main body to stop the advance of an enemy, all the officers and some of the non-commissioned officers are practised in making sketches and reports on their own sections.
