The caponiers are very conspicuous, the upper portions should be taken off down to the loopholes, also the tops of the walls.
The 8-in. R.M.L. howitzer is mounted in the same manner as those on the inner defences, and consequently could not be worked under fire. It should be covered by the parapet and used for curved fire only.
The nomenclature of these last two batteries is misleading, and we recommend that they be called "Stonecutter Central" and "Stonecutter East” respectively.
Shore Battery.
We have in previous reports drawn attention to the unsuitability of 64-prs. for the protection of minefields.
It is proposed that this battery, which is to be constructed specially for this service, should have 3-64-pr. R.M.L. and two Q.F. guns. We recommend that in place of the 64-pr. R.M.L. two Q.F. and two machine guns should be provided.
Kowloon West.
The approved armament for this battery is 3-10-in. R.M.L. guns.
The designs for the reconstruction of this battery are very satisfactory, considering the small expenditure involved.
An artillery store is required.
