Joint Naval and Military Conference, 1906, the examination batteries at Hong Kong will in the future be as follows:-
Eastern entrance.-Pak-sha-wan Battery: 4-12-pr. Q.F. guns. Western entrance.--Upper Belcher Battery: 1-12-pr. Q.F. gun.
Stonecutters West Battery: 2-6-inch B.L. Mark VII guns. A table showing the defence electric lights might with advantage be added to Table A (ii).
25. Page 8, paragraphs 30 and 31.-These paragraphs, dealing with the police and fire brigade, would, it is thought, be more appropriately included in Chapter VI.
Chapter II.-Organization.
26. Page 11 (A), paragraph 2, second column of table, under No. III (Eastern).--- There does not appear to be a battery at Devil's Peak itself. It is suggested that this should read, "East of island from western slopes of Mount Parker inclusive, and Pottinger and Gough Batteries in new territory.'
27. Page 25 (C).—Communications. (ii) By Telephone.—The following lines have been approved since the present revision of the Defence Scheme was submitted. They should be included in the next revision:-
(1.) An additional line from Section Commander II to Kellet's Gap, to be extended
by a switch to Infantry Post, Aberdeen, by an existing line.
(2.) A line from Infantry Post, High West, to Infantry Post, Tywan Bay.
The telephones from F.C. I to Albion and Centurion Batteries are not shown in the diagram, but are given in the tables.
The O.C. E.L. II has a speaking-tube to F.C. II. This should be shown. No. III Section.-A line from S.C. III to Tywan Gap has been approved.
Redoubt Battery is shown on the diagram, and Central Battery in Table E (vi).
It is presumed that the table is incorrect.
No. IV Section.-S.C. IV to 0.C. Reserve is shown in Tables E (ii) and E (iii), but not on the diagram.
28. Page 29 (D) (ii), paragraph 5 (b).—It is thought that the 4th line should read These would be met by the garrison of No. II Section, supplemented by the Reserve." Again, second line of (d) of the same paragraph read, "to seize the Wong-nei- Cheong Gap."
Chapter III.-Action by Staff and Departments.
29. Page 33, A (i), paragraph 1. Intelligence Officer.-No mention of the appoint- ment of an Intelligence Officer appears in the Scheme. As the Major of the General Staff will have more important matters to attend to than the collection and sifting of information, it is highly desirable that an officer not below the rank of Captain should be specially appointed to perform the functions of Intelligence Officer, and that his duties should be laid down in detail. The Intelligence Officer should be nominated confidentially in time of peace, so that he may have an opportunity of making himself familiar with the duties that he would be called upon to perform in war.
An addition should accordingly be made to the paragraph as follows:- (9.) An Intelligence Officer will be appointed who will be attached to the General
Staff, and will act under the supervision of the Major of the General Staff.
