(c.) During the night time, should any vessel (except one of His Majesty's ships making the Secret Signal of the day) be observed approaching the Harbour entrance, the officer in charge will at once inform the selected Battery, the General Staff Officer, and the Commodore.
(d.) Between sunset and sunrise two signalmen are constantly to be on watch, and the officer in charge will, at least once in each watch, satisfy himself that this duty is being properly carried out.
(e) Alarm signals (for use only in the event of telephonic communication being broken).
For enemy's ships approaching
If one or two, two explosive bombs with an interval of ten seconds.
If three or four, two explosive bombs in rapid succession.
If more than four, three bombs in rapid succession.
Torpedo attack by day in thick weather.-Four bombs in rapid succession.
Torpedo attack by night.-As for ships, with the addition of three red rockets
fired together.
14. The officer in charge will be furnished daily by the officer in charge of Signal Stations with the Secret Signal for the coming twenty-four hours.
15. Telephonic communication to Port War Signal Stations.-The following system of communications exists between the port war signal stations:-
(a.) The chain from D'Aguilar Port War Signal Station runs as follows—
D'Aguilar to Pottinger, thence through Fire Commander of the Eastern
Section who telephones to Fortress Commander.
D'Aguilar is in direct communication with the Commodore's Office, the
line being a Naval one maintained by the Military.
(b.) The chain from Victoria Peak runs-
Victoria Peak to Pinewood Battery.
Victoria Peak to Commodore's Office direct. This line is a Colonial line
maintained by the Colonial Government.
(c.) The Chain from Jubilee Signal Post runs-
Jubilee Signal Post to Pinewood Battery, Pinewood to Victoria Peak,
then to Commodore's Office as in (b).
16. In order to avoid possibility of delay, the officer in charge of the port war signal station is, immediately on taking charge of the station, to make sure that the means of communication with the Selected Military Officer are in working order and ready for instant use, and he is to cause them to be tested at least once an hour there- after by sending to the Selected Military Officer a message
such as "all correct or "no news," or anything applicable, a code prefix, arranged locally, leing used to show that the message is genuine. Should there be at any time any delay or difficulty in working this communication, or should the port war signal station be in imminent danger of capture, he is to inform the Selected Military Officer at once by telephone, or by special messenger if no quicker means are available.
NOTE.-The
NOTE. The port war signal station has no duties in connection with the Examination Service.
