CHAPTER IV (2).
(c.) 1 company goes from Murray Barracks direct to reserve of Mainland Section and joins (b).
(d.) 1 company (with 3 officers) takes over all guards that are necessary over ordnance yard, arsenal yard, and magazines, and is distributed as follows :-
By night. Sea front, extending from Army Service Corps pier across entrance to Royal Engineers' camber and up to iron fence on camber.
Two pairs double sentries (with reliefs), 12 men, Queen's Road, N. and E. sides. Two single sentries (with reliefs), 6 men.
Old magazine and 800 barrel magazine: three flying patrols of 2 men (with reliefs),
18 men.
One sentry inside (with reliefs), 3 men. To be taken from police if necessary. Two pairs double sentries blocking Kennedy Road (with reliefs), 12 men.
One flying patrol of 2 men (with reliefs), 6 men.
One sentry inside (with reliefs), 3 men.
In addition, the permanent police at present found by the British infantry, 1 sergeant and 8 men, to be doubled. Senior n.c.os. to be detailed in reliefs, to be in charge of places, i.e., one each to (a), (b), (c), and (d), assisted by junior n.c.os. as required.
Total, including 16 police but exclusive of n.c.os., 73.
By day. The above numbers would be considerably reduced at the discretion of the Officer Commanding, working in conjunction with the Chief Ordnance Officer.
The main body of the company should occupy rooms in Victoria Barracks, some of which would be vacated on the forts being manned by the R.G.A.
To adequately guard an area of this size by night, a network of sentries and patrols is considered a necessity. The company would, therefore, be rested as much as possible by day, and would be relieved by another company periodically if mobilization lasted any length of time.
(e.) 4 companies, with details not allotted to sections, in Murray Barracks and on new parade ground to be held in readiness at the disposal of the General Officer Commanding.
In addition, as temporary arrangements-
(f) Half a company will be despatched from (e) to occupy Stonecutters Island. The Officer Commanding this detachment will be given the following orders :---
(1.) You will take with you two days' rations, blankets, cooking pots, &c. Camp equipment is stored for you on Stonecutters Island, and will be issued to you by the Western Fire Commander.
(2.) You will report yourself to the Officer Commanding the Western Fire Command.
(3.) Ammunition for the whole battalion to complete 300 rounds per rifle, and Maxim gun ammunition up to 11,000 rounds per gun, will be drawn from the Army Ordnance Department.
This will be issued to all companies and detachments leaving Murray Barracks. (4.) Telephonists (precautionary and war stage) will not be sent on any detach- ment with their companies, but will be kept at headquarters in readiness to move in accordance with instructions issued by the Officer i/c Electric Lights and Telephones.
They will rejoin their companies on being relieved by civilian operators. (5.) The baggage allowance for all companies and detachments moving into camp or
