(iii) Telephones.
11. Two separate military systems of telephone communication, known as the Command and Administrative systems, are provided throughout the fortress, already described in Chapter II (C) (ii).
12.-Duties of D.O. Telephones.
He is responsible for the maintenance of all Section and R.A. lines, and for the provision and maintenance of the instruments for the Section and Headquarters officers.

He will detail operators for Headquarters Section, Administrative Exchange, and a few selected offices from trained men of the British Infy. Bn.
13.-Action by D.O. Telephones.
(1.) Before Mobilization.-He will arrange for the training of sufficient telephone operators, about 50 per cent. more than the number required being trained to provide for casualties. Selected men should be trained for the Exchange and Headquarters offices.
(2.) He will arrange for the stores and instruments required on mobilization being kept always ready for immediate use. As a general rule, instruments and batteries are best not kept in outlying offices, even when located in a permanent building.
(3.) On Mobilization.-He will arrange to at once distribute the operators and instruments to their stations, and will complete the work given in the Table below.
(4.) The whole of the offices shown in Table E (vii) will be opened as soon as possible, and a report sent to the D.A.Q.M.G. when they are completed, which should be on the first day of mobilization.
(5.) The D.O. Telephones may engage such additional coolies as may be necessary for the repair of the lines.
(6.) After Mobilization.--All offices will be kept open by night and day, and additional offices may be opened and lines run as stores and time permit.
The following are the main additional communications to be considered:-
(1.) Communications to southern portion of No. II Section.
(ii) Communications to Kowloon Hills.

Draw one instrument fro'n Headquarters Store and take down 1
five instruments, Wellington Barracks.
Instal five in Section Commander's post at Belcher, and connect up to Fortress Headquarters, FC. (1), F.C. (2), O.C.S.M. (2), and Sandy Bay Gap. Instal one in alarm post, Mount Davis, and connect up to F.C. (2). Take down one instrument at Pinewood Battery and instal at Sandy Bay Gap for infantry post, and connect to Section Commander.
Six infantry operators should accompany this party, two for each office.
Take down two instruments in Victoria Barracks and one each from R.A. and R.E. messes, Ordnance office, office of I.O.M., and Moun: Austin Barracks guard-room. Draw thirteen others from Headquarters Store. Instal three instruments at Section Commander's post at Sanitarium, and connect to Fortress Headquarters and to the two infantry posts at Kellett Neck and Wong-nei-Cheong Gap.
Instal four instruments in infantry post at Kellett Neck and connect to Section Commander and to the infantry posts at High West, Waterfall Bay, and Aberdeen.
Instal five instruments in infantry post at Wong-nei- Cheong Gap and connect to Section Conimander and to the infantry posts at Middle Gap, Deep Water Bay (for Repulse Bay), Stanley, and Tytam Reservoir.
Instal eight instruments in the remaining infantry posts from Tytam Reservoir to High West, and connect to Section Commander.
Twenty-two infantry operators (two per office) should accompany this party.
