CHAPTER VI (ii).
These are:-
At Lyemun, the whole channel,
Off Belcher, the west end of the channel is marked by two lighted buoys, and from there the channel coincides with the central fairway of the harbour.
This channel is 1,000 feet wide.
North of Stonecutters, the channel extends from two buoys placed off the north point to two buoys off the north-east corner. It is 300 yards wide.
To prevent sailing ships being driven out of these channels on to the minefields, tugs must be provided, and their use must be compulsory.
Only vessels wishing to stop in Hong Kong should be allowed to enter, junks and other traffic, which in time of peace use the harbour as a thoroughfare between the Canton River and places to the eastward, should be diverted to the south side of the island.
Junks using the harbour may be ordered to anchor in a selected portion or Kowloon Bay, but this precaution would only be necessary in the event of a threatened rising of the Chinese population.
