位於歌賦街尾端，被稱為「百步梯」
的石級路段中間，伸延至樓梯街之弓絃
巷，
1976年。
弓絃巷的俗名為「竹樹坡」，其上
有若干間製紙盒、機器及藥材磨粉的店
舖，當中以稱為「落爐舖」的回收舊金銀
首飾店最多。
1970年代後期，介乎城隍
街與檔利街的一段弓絃巷連同樓宇全被
夷平。包括右上方荷李活道的唐樓，於
2003年建成住宅屋苑荷李活華庭。

內設有室內泳池及跑道，為當時始創。
樓梯街旁的威靈頓英文書院，現為東華
醫院住宅屋苑東盛台所在。青年會的所
在於疫症發生前名為「左時里西」。

由荷李活道下望西街，
1928年。
可見包括富貴全、慶樂山房、寶萬年等多家為粵劇、宴會和喜慶場合配樂助興的大小「八音館」，
以及福壽來戲班。此外，還有一省港改良配景手托戲（木偶戲）班。下端與摩羅下街交界的地方則有間
永昌燈籠店。此街的上端亦有音樂儀仗店卉恒興。大部分西街與及摩羅下街於
1970年代後期開始重
建為可通車的樂古道。

觀音堂。
其右方為落成於
1902年
5月的新
孖廟，當時，廟內供奉天后、包公、黃
大仙、侯王、觀音及綏靖伯等神祇。
1990年代，這一帶大部分的廟宇被拆
卸，改建為住宅大廈。

磅巷與太平山街交界，約
1988年。
高台上為新孖廟、水月宮及觀音
廟，部分包括濟公等神祇是由位於灣仔
因興建胡忠大廈而清拆之迪龍里遷至此
者。這一帶尤其是被稱為「百姓廟」的廣
福義祠，之前是農曆驚蟄「打小人」勝
地。
1960年代，此勝地遷至銅鑼灣堅拿
道兩端。

設於荷李活道與差館上街之間，接近磅巷的一條無名石级道上的老牌鞋檔，
2003年。
自和乎後起，這一帶包括東街、西街、水巷、水池巷以至樓梯街，其上有不少鞋檔、攝影檔、洋
服恤衫檔及理髮檔等，服務普羅街坊市民。此外，亦有雲吞、魚蛋粉及粥麵檔，當中以吳源記粥麵較著
名。
70年代，吳源記發展為一家三層高酒家。

步行的起點是「南北行街」（文咸西街），即
「三角碼頭」以西的碼頭區，包括米行雲集和有
多座碼頭的干諾道西、由鹹魚欄演變為海味街
的德輔道西、西營盤「中心點」的正街及兩旁的
街道。新舊七號差館及周遭的香港大學、貨倉
和工廠。印象最深刻的是設於千諾道西，以及
旁邊的朝光街、西邊街及正街，那道於黃昏起
關閉的保安街閘，充滿森嚴肅殺的氣氛。
使人感興趣的，是由山道、皇后大道西和
德輔道西等街道構成，位於屈地街煤氣廠以西
的「塘西風月區」，雖然已消失了

0多年，但
在此「城開不夜、紙醉金迷」煙花之地中的「紅
牌阿姑」倩影，仍縈繞在不少人之腦際。

70年代，在西環卑路乍灣填海而獲致的
堅尼地城，早期為貨倉、工廠、碼頭和船廠區，
最龐大者是創設於

885年的香港蕨纜廠，於
1
96
0年代中改建為聯邦新樓住宅羣。
當時，西環仍頗為荒涼，市民往西環主要
是到域多利道的兩座泳場。近年，港鐵開通至
西環，該區旋即有翻天覆地的變化。

The tour takes off al "Nam Pak Hong Slreel"
(Bonham Strand " 'esl) Triangular Pier (or \\Ting
Lok Street \,\'harl) exploring the pier along Praya
Kennedy Town. In earlier times, there were many
piers serving rice importing firms established
along Connaughl Road " 'est. The Lradilional
salted fish market has transformed itself inlo Lhe
present-day dried seafood hub. The focus is now
cenlred around Cenlre Slreel, plus the environs of
the University of Hong Kong and Lhe many sideslreels,
lanes and alley-ways Lhat tiller Lhe area,
providing spaces for shops, slore-houses, godowns
and small factories. The most intense memory
comes from Lhc recolleclion of Lhe ereclion of
security gales which were lowered at dusk across
Lhe central parts of Connaught Road \Vest, Chiu
Kwong Slreel,,vcslcrn Street and Cenlre Slrccl.
These gales prevenled unaulhorized vehicular
access and conjured up a deep sense of Lense
securily and foreboding.

'Tong Tsui brothel area ·which covered Lhe environs
of Hill Road, the section of Queen's Road \Vest
next to lhe coal gas lanks on \\Thilty Street and
part of Des Voeux Road \\resl. Although 80 years
or more has elapsed after prostitution was banned
in 1935, sweet memories still linger in the minds
or revellers pasl who relished Lhe delighls or ''lhe
Cily lhal never sleeps". Eal, drink and make merry
for lomorrow may Larry. The services provided by
Lop-nolch ladies of Lhe nighl and others must have
lefl an indelible impression in Lhe minds of many
conlended clienls.
In Lhe 1870's, the reclamalion of Belcher Bay
area provided new land (Kennedy Town) for Lhe
construction and provision of godowns, factories,
piers and small ship repair yards. A ralher largescale
rope making works was sel up in 1885 along
Forbes Street bet ween Davis Street and Smithfield,
and since the 1960's this area has phocnixcd into a
vasl rcsidcnlial complex, the Lucn Bong Mansion.
In the early 20th century, \Vestern district
was a quite desolate and out-of-the way area.
Nonethe less, quite a few people often went there
to patronise the several swimming sheds along a
slrclch of Victoria Road. Only one now remains,
Lhe Sai \Van. The extension of Lhe ~fTR Island line
to Kennedy Town has transformed the area into
a vibrant and prosperous part or wonderful Hong
Kong.
