2015年夏天,香港三聯書店決定增訂1997年5月出版的《香港史新編》(以下簡
稱《新編》)。從該年7月起工作全面鋪開,到今年6月完成,前後花了一年時間。
一部史學著作面世近二十年,雖然時間驗證了它存在的價值,但增訂毫無疑問仍
是必要的。其一是作品在現實的檢驗中會有各種回應,包括作品的不足與缺漏;其二
是作者的研究不斷加深,對以前的陳述可能會有更新與修訂;其三是新的歷史資料和
訊息會不斷被發現而需要增加。
我們在研究增訂計劃的時候,首先考慮的是作品的結構問題。作為一個作品的結
20 構,不僅是涉及作品的表述方式與層次,同時亦涉及它的内部邏輯和外部形態是否與
內容相符的問題。第一版《新編》既不是傳統的專題史,也不是傳統的通史或斷代史。
全書以香港歷史縱向發展的大脈絡為統領,即從遠古說起,一直延續到當代。而在每
一章,都設立一個明確的中心--專題,在具體的敘述方面,仍以時間先後為次序,
即用縱和橫二元結合的結構方式來處理。

我們認為用這種結構的原因是基於香港歷史的特殊性。我們既不能忘記香港歷史
的本源,又不能忽略香港發展的最重要階段。
香港位於中國南部的邊陲地帶,珠江的出海口,自古就有人類在此活動,而在秦
朝就被納入中國的版圖,歷代都在王朝的管治之下。然而,它與內陸一些地區的發展
亦有不同,在19世紀中葉以前,它並沒有發展為一個矚目的經濟高度發展的區域,
30 而且在歷史上也沒有留下充分,且具延續性的文獻和考古資料,是屬於一個人口流動
性極高的地區。換句話說,它在一段相當長的歷史階段,還沒有遇上一個能充分發展

的機遇,但是,這並不說明它在漫長的歷史發展中是一片空白,一直處於荒蕪狀態。
過去有些人常常把"從一條小漁村變成一個國際大都會"來形容香港歷史的發展,久
而久之,就變成了好像是英國人在19世紀中葉從天而降,才把香港這個從來都是渺
無人煙的荒島,一下子開拓成繁華的國際城市。這實際是一種對歷史的誤解。因此,
認識香港古代的歷史,是認識香港社會文化根源的重要基礎。
我們並不否認香港近現代歷史的起點時間是19世紀中葉,並且認為近一百多年
是香港發展史上最重要時刻。目前香港社會方方面面的東西,無不與這段時期直接相
關。所以,除了從歷史的源頭認識香港社會外,我們更需要從近一百多年香港社會的
政治、經濟、社會、文化等方面的存在和變化去認識香港,才能獲得一種理性的認
知,而不是人云亦云,容易被人蒙騙。
本書內容安排的整體構思是:第一至第三章,從遠古到現代香港社會發展的歷史
脈絡,把當代香港社會的"前因"作明確的描述和交待,然後從第四章開始分專題論
述社會各個方面的發展。上冊,着重是社會、政治和經濟;下冊,則是教育、文化、
宗教和藝術。
當然,本書所安排的章節內容,並不是香港歷史的全部,而只是對香港歷史發展
具較重要影響的方面而已。
是次增訂,我們首先堅持上述談及的二元結構性的安排原則不變,並確定了如下
兩個主要的修訂原則和具體辦法。
(1)全書敘述時間,上限仍從遠古開始,到1997年香港回歸祖國前為下限。各
章在內容上根據需要進行訂正、修改和補充。章節方面只增加<殖民地時代香港的法
制與司法>一章,以使其在涵蓋香港歷史重點內容方面顯得更加完整。並請黃文江教
授,為本次增訂撰寫了一份<香港歷史學術研究中英文論著書目(1997-2015)〉放在
附錄,為讀者提供第一版以來有關香港史研究的中、英文著述目錄。
(2)增訂者一般以原作者為主。若因各種緣由(如原作者去世,或因身體原因無
法參與、無法聯繫等)才酌量邀請新作者參與。凡遇這種情況,署名方式為原作者加
新作者。

香港史的研究除了讓我們能認識香港地區歷史的發展,明白在特殊的歷史環境

下,甚麼成為我們正面的經驗,甚麼是我們的歷史教訓之外,當然,我們也應看到,
香港在內地受到各種問題的困擾和衝擊的年代,相反經濟得到發展,那是因為香港
在"天時、地利、人和"的多重因素配合下而取的成果,而並不是殖民制度當然的"恩
賜"。我們要本著"事實求是"和"以史為鑒"的態度研究香港歷史。知過去而懂現在,
懂現在而籌未來,為開拓香港更美好的前景而從事香港歷史的研究。
從學術的角度看,香港研究亦可視作一個有價值的研究課題,把它視為世界殖民
時期一個特別的案例進行研究,從而可以更加清楚地看到殖民時代歷史的真實演繹過
程,殖民時代退出歷史舞台的時候給我們留下了什麼。香港是在世界殖民高峰時期被
英國通過戰爭、不平等條約,用割讓和租借等手段變成為殖民地的。一方面,香港在
英國的管治下社會制度和文化受到西方一定的影響;但另一方面,香港並沒有因為被
割讓而中止與祖國的聯繫。我們清楚地看到,通過人口流動,和各種渠道的交往,以
及殖民政策中的種族隔離、歧視所得到的相反效果,香港地區在文化上仍然是以中華
文化為主體的地區。我們應該看到,香港的經濟起飛是在20世紀70年代,並不是19
世紀 30 年代到20世紀初的"維多利亞時代",香港人自身自強不息的努力是成功的重
要因素。
另外,香港歷史在近現代進程中構成的複雜性也是非常吸引我們的地方。如我們
看到在香港近現代成長的過程中,中華文化的底色如何在各個歷史階段,通過不同的
方式滲人社會。它並非以社會政權倡導或行政干預作為後盾,而是在與西方文化接壤
的前沿地帶自然凝聚,它並非因陳守舊,而是有所變化和創新,充分說明中華文化對
社會變化的適應性和具有的張力。
很值得關注的一點是香港自被英國殖民主義割佔後,並非與中國的社會進程截然
脫離,置之度外。我們應非常清楚地看到,無論是民國時期還是後來中華人民共和國
建立前後,香港都以特殊的身份和形態被捲入這些社會變革的洪流之中,從人員、物
質、精神的參與和支持從不間斷,只要我們翻開香港的歷史報刊,有哪一天沒有內地
的報導呢?從歷史的宏觀來看,內地的人民沒有忘記香港,香港人也沒有忘記祖國。
在香港回歸以前,香港人早就已經被稱為"同胞"了,這個意味深長的稱呼深刻地表
述了內地對香港人的基本態度。我們也可以這樣說,中國今天的成就,絕對少不了香
港人的貢獻和努力。這些歷史的進程和事實我們應該永遠記取。
我們應該承認,由於香港曾經離開母體而受到西方殖民的管治,在文化上產生
一些不同的因素,這是完全合理和可以理解的。我們應當承認差異,但無論如何,
"血濃於水",兄弟姐妹之間不同的個性應該互相包容,在認同大原則的基礎上,在

生活中不斷磨合,而對香港歷史發展進程的確實了解,是分離時代造成隔閡的良性治
療劑。

聚集二十多個各種研究領域的學者、專家寫一本歷史書,特別是他們都有香港的
生活體驗,而且絕大部分就是香港人,實在是難能可貴。作為學者,他們具有嚴謹的
學風、良好的素養、廣闊的視野和敢言的精神;作為香港人,他們有很深的經歷,對
香港社會既有感性又有理性的認識,特別是有對這片土地懷有很深的感情,這是我在
參與此書編撰和出版過程中最深的感受。
當然,每一個學者都有自己的研究方法和觀點。我們在整個出版過程中,把專重
學者們的學術觀點和看法放在首位,在此基礎上,我們充分考慮結構上的問題,使這
本由多人合作而成的史書成為一部內在邏輯性較強的作品。
王賡武教授在本書〈序〉的第一句話就指出"人類和國家的歷史值得反覆書寫"。
尤其是一些重要的地區、國家的歷史,它的存在和發展,與世界的進程息息相關,
或者可以說它是人類歷史發展的節點,它的歷史內涵更加豐富。香港應該列入它們的
行列。
上文曾經提及,香港歷史是當代一個值得特別關注的課題。特別是當今世界風雲
變幻,殖民時代過去了,以美英為首的世界霸權時代亦已結束,中國和一些"後進"
的國家正在興起,然而,我們不得不處裡過去遺留的歷史問題,一個時代的終結並不
是意味著一切的終結。"前事不忘,後事之師",研究和了解歷史不是為了死去的人而
是為了活著的人,為了未來的人。
