$21.50 69-15829
" This is an unusually interesting book about some
Buddhist temple shrines located in man- made caves
on the face of Maichishan mountain in Kansu
Province in China. Buddhist monks apparently
began making the caves during the 2nd Century A.D.
The last dated inscription is 1866. From then
14
until 1952 , when an archaeological team
visited the caves , the area was virtually
forgotten. The author, professor of Oriental
art, Stanford University, has based his text
on an examination of photographs taken in
1958 by Miss Darbois , the photographer for
the only known European Oriental art special
ist party to visit the site in the last 100
years . The site is important for an under
standing of the role of clay sculpture in the
history of Chinese art. The book is recom

Wang, Chi - ch'ien MOUNTAINS OF THE MIND : THE
LANDSCAPE PAINTING OF WANG CHI- CH'IEN
ed by Meredith Walker 1970 77p color
illus $ 12.50 70-102914
" This slim volume serves as a handsome
introduction to the paintings of Wang Chi'ch- en ,
a well- known collector and historian of Chinese
art. It presents him as possibly the finest
contemporary Chinese painter and consists of
an appreciation, three critiques based on an
exhibit in San Francisco , and 22 reproductions
of imaginary landscapes , each with an explana
tory note . Wang is the present- day example of
the classical Chinese scholar- painter to whom
brushwork is more important than delineation of
an object. To this traditional emphasis Wang has
added a modern concern for materials and he
makes extensive use of crumpled folds and faults
in the paper, and splashed dots . The results
have much of the serene beauty of the past, but
at the same time , by limiting the focus to a
smaller area, he produces a dynamic concentra
tion which is new to Chinese art and more rela
tive to our Western eye. For the most part, the
pictures are the products of the last two years .
Unquestionably, Wang is the most exciting indivi
dual talent representing Chinese art today , an art
all too often static in its conformance to tradition
or as propaganda. This book belongs in any
Oriental art collection . " LJ 1 Apr 70

dynasties that ruled China before the Republican

which ruled a loose feudal state rather than a
centralized empire . This volume traces the origin

an early period of the Chou , and finds that ' the
power of Western Chou rulers was greater than

Hoyt, Edwin Palmer THE BOXER REBELLION Abelard
1968 175p illus $4.50 68-13241
"A straightforward account of the Boxer Rebel
lion and its immediate antecedents and aftermath .
The author draws a parallel between the uprising
of the Boxers and the violence against foreign
diplomatic representatives in Peking in 1967 ,
maintaining that to understand the attitudes of
the Chinese in such matters as the Red Guard
movement one must know how and why Chinese
sentiment against foreign influences was born.
Drawing on contemporary reports from which he
occasionally quotes , Hoyt describes the many
disorganized battles and court intrigues and
places the war in historical perspective . Brief
bibliography . For history enthusiast or world
