'M' Mark Support Package
The 'M' Mark Support Package was launched in November 2004 by the Sports Commission's Major Sports Events Committee to seek greater support from the commercial sector and the community for the National Sports Associations to develop more sustainable major international sports events. In addition to logistic support from the Government, some 'M' Mark events also receive funds from the Arts and Sports Development Fund. In 2008, nine events were given 'M' Mark status and/or support packages.
2009 East Asian Games
Hong Kong will host the 5th East Asian Games (EAG) in 2009. A planning committee has been set up to plan and prepare for the event, enlist community support, develop publicity and marketing strategies, and advise on the venues and facilities.
A Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games Gallery and a website were set up to display exhibits to promote the EAG and to disseminate information on the preparatory work being done for the event. The event was widely publicised through promotional activities during the Hong Kong Flower Show, the launching of an EAG Mascot, a Volunteer Programme, a Souvenir Shop, an EAG Theme Song and the unveiling of a countdown clock at a One-year Countdown Ceremony.
The Government has been upgrading 13 existing LCSD sports venues and facilities to the required international standards for the organisation of competition events for the Games. The new Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground will be used for the Games' athletic events. These new and upgraded projects will be completed in the first half of 2009.
The 11th National Winter Games of the People's Republic of China
The 11th National Winter Games of the People's Republic of China was held in Qiqihar in January 2008. A total of 26 Hong Kong athletes took part in three competition events. They achieved good performance in the women's single short. figure skating programme and men's ice hockey events.
2008 Bun Carnival
Tens of thousands of local and overseas visitors converged on Cheung Chau Island to watch the popular annual Bun Carnival which was held from April 26 to May 13. The carnival was given extensive coverage by the local and international news media. More than 7 000 people took part in the competitions and other activities, the highlight of which was the bun scrambling competition in which participants vie with each other to retrieve buns from the exterior of the 14-metre high bun tower.
