Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

Established by ordinance with an autonomous governing council, the Academy offers professional training in dance, drama, music, film and television, theatre technical arts and Chinese traditional theatre. A series of special celebratory programmes was arranged to mark the Academy's 20th anniversary, climaxed with the inauguration of the Academy Alumni Association in June.

The Bethanie, an 1875 former French Mission building at Pok Fu Lam, was designated as the Academy's second campus with detailed architectural designs being developed and submitted to the authorities for approval.

The Academy's regional and international profile continued to develop through successful overseas tours. With the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices in Brussels and Singapore, the School of Music undertook performance tours throughout Europe and Asia in January and February.

The Academy's Extension and Continuing Education for Life (EXCEL) Unit celebrated its third anniversary in May. During the year EXCEL enrolled 6 000 participants in 258 courses across the spectrum of arts disciplines.

Hong Kong Arts Centre

The mission of the Hong Kong Arts Centre is to nurture creativity, arts and cultural engagement through its two-pronged approach in promoting contemporary performing arts, visual arts as well as film and video arts and in providing lifelong and life-wide arts education.

Home to artists' bold and creative explorations, the Arts Centre in 2004 featured numerous presentations in various art forms, including film and video arts programmes, visual arts programmes, and performing arts programme. The Arts Centre is also the executed organisation of the 'Soul of the City' International Symposium on Art and Public Space presented by the HAB and co-organised the Book Festival 2004.

Established since 2000, the Art School the Centre's education arm offers integrated programmes ranging from short courses to certificate, diploma, higher diploma, associate degree, first degree and higher degree, covering five academic areas: fine arts, applied arts, media arts, arts education and humanities. Since 2003, the Art School has become a recognised sub-degree award granting institution.

The Fringe Club

The Fringe Club is housed in a cold storage warehouse, an historic monument built in 1890. Since the Fringe Club took over the building in December 1983, it has undergone seven major renovations to provide a vibrant contemporary arts space. In 2001, the Fringe Club was given the Heritage Award by the Government for its innovative adaptive use of the historical building.
