The international Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering concludes a plenary meeting in Hong Kong, with the Commissioner for Narcotics, Mrs Clarie Lo, the FATF President, in the chair.

Opening the Planning Department's Building a Dynamic Hong Kong Exhibition, the Chief Executive says projects to be undertaken in the next 10 years will yield major social and economic benefits.

The Chief Secretary for Administration begins a round of meetings on Hong Kong-related matters with CPG leaders and officials in Beijing, including Premier Zhu Rongji and Vice-Premier Qian Qichen.

The Secretary for Justice, Ms Elsie Leung, calls on CPG leaders and officials during a two-day visit to Beijing.

Mr Tung Chee Hwa is declared elected unopposed in the HKSAR's second Chief Executive election, at the close of the two-week nomination exercise in which Mr Tung is the only validly nominated candidate.

The Securities and Futures Ordinance is passed by the Legislative Council; it consolidates and modernises 10 existing ordinances into a single piece of legislation to govern financial and investment products, regulate the securities and futures market, and protect investors.

The Chief Secretary for Administration leads a government delegation in the fifth meeting of the Hong Kong/Guangdong Cooperation Joint Conference, held in Zhuhai.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Tsang Yam-pui, gives a keynote address at the opening of a four-day Transnational Organised Crime Conference at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Albert Lam, presents the first Hong Kong Air Operator's Certificate issued since the establishment of the HKSAR to a new helicopter company - CR Airways Limited, which will provide passenger charter services within the Pearl River Delta region.
