The distinctive sweeping design and ample use of natural light disguise the massive size of the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) terminal. Within weeks of its opening, the operations were running as planned and on December 27, it handled a record of more than 100 000 passengers and their baggage on one day.
In the same month, HKIA was voted one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century by US-based CONEXPO- CONIAGG '99. A total of 132 projects and buildings around the world participated in the competition. HKIA is the only Asian project among the 10 winners.
