The 1998 festival contained 33 programmes - eight commissions featuring local
talent - and averaged 89 per cent attendance with 88 316 tickets sold. Highlights included the opera 'Salome' with Maria Ewing; the rock musical 'The Black Rider', directed by Robert Wilson; the National Dance Company from Spain; the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and festival
commissions ‘The Dresser', featuring Chung King-fai, and 'Shooting Suns' by Theatre Ensemble.
