Exploration Theatre
Exploration Theatre presented three major productions, 119 educational performances at Provisional Regional Council venues, primary and secondary school halls in Season 98/99. Major productions included Timeless Love, Homecoming and Benefactors.
Hong Kong Sinfonietta
The Hong Kong Sinfonietta's variety of concert programmes in 1998, including New Year Concerts, concerts with the combination of two similar Chinese and Western solo instruments, and Outstanding Young-talents Concerts..The orchestra commissioned four Hong Kong composers' works and premiered 20 modern works. It participated in 37 accompaniment performances and 25 education and promotion performances.
Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts
Established by ordinance in 1984 with an autonomous governing council, the Academy offers professional training up to degree level in dance, drama, film/TV, music and theatre technical arts.
The major development of the year came in September, when for the first time the academy offered part-time courses in Cantonese Opera, arranged on three levels leading to foundation, intermediate and higher certificates. The courses were offered in collaboration with the Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong Ltd.
Other highlights of 1998 included:
January: The Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation revalidated the ballet stream's BFA Honours degree for a further six years.
April: The academy hosted the Asian competition of the Calgary International Organ Festival, under the direction of renowned organist Simon Preston.
June: At the invitation of the HKSARG Information Services Department, academy students staged performances of Chinese Dance in Washington and Seattle, accompanying the Chief Secretary for Administration's visit to the USA.
July: The School of Film and Television celebrated its first cohort of Bachelor of Fine Arts graduates with a public screening of graduation projects.
August: 68 dance students participated in International Festival of Dance Academies in Manila, Philippines.
October: Music students performed in Milan, Italy at the invitation of the Information Services Department.
November: The performance highlight of the year was the musical The Wizard of Oz, staged with participation from all five Schools of the Academy. Other highlights throughout the year included the Puccini opera double bill Gianni Schicchi/Suor Angelica and the popular Government House concert series.
Hong Kong Arts Centre
Established in 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre is an independent and non-profit making multi-disciplinary arts organisation, presenting both mainstream and contemporary visual arts, film and video, performing arts and arts education programmes to the public.
