Above: The Director of

Civil Aviation, Mr Richard Siegel, with Chief Secretary for Administration Mrs Anson Chan, formally closed the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at Kai Tak when he switched off the runway lights at 1.16 am on July 6, 73 years after the first recorded flight in 1925. Thousands of people flocked to the airport car park (top) and the Kwun Tong breakwater (left) in the final days to catch a glimpse of aircraft making the legendary landings and take-offs.
