Punters throng to the race tracks at Sha Tin and Happy Valley.
The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club took more than $72 billion in bets during the year. Most of that was paid out as prizes, the government collected $9.2 billion in duty and another $1.2 billion went to charity. The year's largest dividend was $70,853,769 for a $10 unit on May 31. CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: The stands at Sha Tin are packed for International Race Day; hunting for inspiration; this bronze horse is a fitting emblem at the Jockey Club's new Happy Valley headquarters; recently retired champion jockey Tony Cruz pats his mount before one of his last races; the field rounds the bend on the first day of racing at the re-opened Happy Valley; winners celebrate.
