renowned Moscow Art Theatre. Other highlights featured contemporary music composer Philip Glass, Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza, passionate flamenco dance from Spain, Butoh dance from Japan, a rock-'n-roll circus from France and an exhibition of photography from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Festival Fringe
The Hong Kong Festival Fringe was founded in 1982. In the past 12 years, it has developed from an annual open arts festival into a successful year-round operation which gives the emerging artists of Hong Kong the opportunity to hone their skills and create new works.
The 1994 Festival Fringe, staged over three weeks in January and February, was attended by some 300 000 people. Over 200 groups and individual artists from Hong Kong and overseas took part.
Operating from the Fringe Club, the Festival Fringe staff also organised and mounted new shows, exhibitions, workshops and an active outreach programme.
Urban Council Presentations
The Urban Council presented 354 performances in various art forms, attracting a total audience of over 335 340.
Highlights of its music programmes included orchestral concerts by the English Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; ensemble works by the Romeros Guitar Quartet and the Twelve Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; and recitals by Sviatoslav Richter and Katia Ricciarelli.
Dance programme delights included performances by the Bolshoi Theatre Yuri Grigorovich Ballet, the Jennifer Muller Company and the World Professional Ballroom and Latin American Dance Champions.
Among the theatrical attractions were productions of the Mummenschanz Swiss Mime Theatre and the Axis Mime Theatre, and works by various local drama companies. Operatic offerings included modern Peking opera by the Contemporary Legend Theatre, traditional Kun opera by the Northern Kunqu Company and a local production of Verdi's La Traviata.
Hong Kong International Film Festival
The Hong Kong International Film Festival is one of the world's major annual, non- competitive, film festivals.
The 18th festival in 1994 presented 221 films from 39 countries. Apart from the screening of films, several fringe activities were also held, including the Posters and Stills Exhibition of Participating Films, the Ingmar Bergman 75: Women, Dreams and Demons Photo Exhibition and one seminar each on Leni Riefenstahl and Li Pingqian.
Of a total of 103 714 tickets available, 78 306 were sold and 21 825 people attended the seminars and exhibitions.
Hong Kong Independent Short Film Competition
The competition aims to promote the production of quality non-commercial short films and to encourage creative independent film production in the territory.
The prize presentation for the 1994 competition was held during the opening reception of the 18th Hong Kong International Film Festival and all the winning entries were screened.
