During the year, the institute provided a venue for large scale sports functions. In March, sports medicine professionals and sports scientists from 90 countries gathered at the institute for the International Sports Medicine Conference. The Hong Kong Sports Institute also staged Sports Expo '92 in conjunction with Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Sports Development Board in July.

Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong

The Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1951 as the official olympic committee of the territory, controls Hong Kong's participation in the Olympic, Commonwealth, Asian, East Asian and World Games. It plays a major role in promoting sports in Hong Kong by encouraging participation in international competitions by its 60 affiliated sports associations. It is the acknowledged voice of sport in Hong Kong and throughout the sports world.

One of the objectives of the federation is the promotion of sports education. For more than two decades it has sponsored sports leaders, administrators, coaches, technical officials and athletes to attend courses and conferences held locally and overseas.

It organises monthly courses on sports leadership, sports administration, sports medicine, sports science, plus courses on sport management and sport coaching in conjunction with the United States Sports Academy. It sends Hong Kong representatives to the annual International Olympic Academy and sponsors three Olympic solidarity courses each year.

Special sports education activities during the year included a weekend sports camp on commercialisation in sports and the Olympic movement; a seminar, in conjunction with Hong Kong Polytechnic, on biomechanics of sports; a seminar, in conjunction with the Education Department of Hong Kong, on the Olympic movement; and a weekend seminar in conjunction with the University of Oregon on sports leadership.

The federation, together with governing sports bodies and municipal councils, organises an annual event The Hong Kong Festival of Sports. This large-scale community-building event held each year since 1985, attracts wide participation and continues for more than two months.

Urban Council

The Urban Council manages a wide range of sports and recreational facilities, and runs numerous low-cost introductory courses to attract participation by people of all ages. The council also encourages and promotes sporting activities by subsidising competitions organised by various governing bodies.
