To develop the young audience, the orchestra performed in schools for some 21 470 pupils during the year. Fringe activities were organised through the Friends of the Philharmonic.
Hong Kong Repertory Theatre

Local audiences continued to give enthusiastic support to the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. In 1991, the company staged nine productions - four western, three Chinese and two originals in 118 performances. The company gave a total of 146 performances including free student performances and lecture demonstrations in schools and district community centres. These performances attracted a total audience of 51 000.
The Marriage of Figaro, staged at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, was the highlight of the year, and was the company's entry for the 1991 Arts Festival.
Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra
The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is Hong Kong's only professional Chinese music orchestra. In 1991, the 85-member orchestra gave 120 performances under the baton of different local, mainland and overseas conductors, attracting a total audience of 103 250.
Apart from regular concerts, the orchestra also presented concerts in small ensembles, participated in district arts festivals and organised free outreach performances at civic centres, district community centres and schools.
As one of the world's leading Chinese orchestras, it explores new frontiers in Chinese music by experimenting with new techniques and styles. It continues to expand the Chinese orchestral music repertoire by commissioning local, mainland and overseas composers to undertake new compositions and arrangements.
Hong Kong Dance Company
The Hong Kong Dance Company is the only professional Chinese dance company in the territory to present traditional and Chinese folk dances and new dance dramas choreographed on Chinese and Hong Kong themes.
The year 1991 marked its 10th anniversary and the 41-member company presented six major productions in 25 performances, attracting 13 737 people. Apart from major productions, the company also gave free performances and lecture demonstrations in civic centres, schools and district community centres to 58 440 people.
Chung Ying Theatre Company
The Chung Ying Theatre Company, which is supported by the Council for the Performing Arts, staged Volpone as part of the 1991 Arts Festival and returned in May to play regional venues in Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan. Other revivals were two short plays by local playwrights and a Cantonese version of Willy Russell's Educating Rita.
Visiting UK director and clown Gerry Flanagan devised a highly original production Fools, Fools, Fools which opened in August for the International Arts Carnival. The production later toured regional venues and played to audiences in primary schools. For infants, the company staged Monkey See, Monkey Do, while Questions Arising Today from a Mutiny in 1789 toured secondary schools.
City Contemporary Dance Company
The City Contemporary Dance Company kicked off its dance season with a new dance-opera, Nine Songs, as part of the 1991 Arts Festival, to live music composed by Tan
