THE ENVIRONMENT

Another area of concern is the ever-increasing traffic volume and the close proximity of some of the major roads to high-rise residential developments. After the completion of a successful resurfacing trial with a special quiet road-surfacing material conducted on the Island Eastern Corridor in 1989, the government had decided to embark on a programme to resurface 14 road sections in the territory, which would benefit about 11 000 households. Three sections of the Island Eastern Corridor were completed at a total cost of $6 million. The remaining sections are programmed to be resurfaced in the next two years at an estimated cost of $26 million. On an on-going basis, further road sections will be identified for resurfacing with quiet road-surface material to relieve the traffic noise problem.
