RECREATION, SPORTS AND THE ARTS

Following the decision to construct the new airport at Chek Lap Kok, the office began conserving and recording archaeological and historical items within the affected areas. The resite of the Tin Hau Temple on Chek Lap Kok and the archaeological excavations undertaken by the Hong Kong Archaeological Society with a $1.5 million grant from the Jockey Club began in the autumn. Further rescue operations are planned. The annual survey of historical settlements in the territory, conducted by students during the summer months since 1977, was concentrated in the Tung Chung valley, which will be developed as a new town for people working at the airport.

Educational guided tours were organised for community groups and schools. A workshop for teachers on Teaching of Prehistory in Form I proved to be very successful. Four information pamphlets on selected groups of monuments such as Tai Fu Tai, Man Lun-fung Ancestral Hall, Tung Lung Chau ancient rock carvings were published for free distribution to the public.
