ISLANDS
Hong Kong's New Territories, with a total land area of 370.5 square miles, include more than 230 offshore islands. In the past, islands have played an important role in Hong Kong's economic and social progress, and proposed development will ensure they continue to do so in the future. At High Island a huge water catchment project is underway, Tsing Yi Island is being developed as an industrial and residential centre, and Lantau Island will feature prominently in the territory's future tourist and rec- reational development.
