Pigs are the principal food animals reared in Hong Kong and the Agricul- ture and Forestry Department maintains herds of pure exotic strain such as Berkshires, Mid Whites and Large Whites for the eventual improvement of the Colony's stock. A recent census showed there are about 2,000 ́water buffaloes in the Colony, kept mainly for work purposes.
