On the afternoon of Saturday, 28th December, 1957, a crowd of nearly 25,000 people thronged into the Colony Stadium at So Kon Po to bid farewell to the Governor, Sir Alexander Grantham, and his wife, on the eve of their leaving Hong Kong after 10 years unstinted service to the community. At the ceremony cheques totalling nearly $300,000 in value were received by Sir Alexander for presentation to the Grantham Scholarships Fund, founded to commemorate his governorship.
