PIECE GOODS.

حمد

Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 15th Dec., 1909, státe: - Machester though wanting work badly is not prepared to do it at a loss and consequently the buying for this market is very limited. The ex port of Plain Cotton for last month was 20,000,0 0 yards to Hongkong and China. According 10 Messrs. W. H. Not & Co's Tables for October the Col ny took 37% of the Bleached goods and 231% of the Grey. The Cotton market in Liver- pool has kept very firm, the spot price for Mid-American coming today 7.874, yesterday March/April option being quoted 7.74d. Egyptian after touching 131d, has dropped to 13 d. The New York Cotron market has advance t 15.21 cents for March option The Girners' report to 1st instant is 8,878,00 bales ngai et 11,000,000 bales last year. To make the calculation that is usually made on the basis of these figures and the average for the last three years, namely, 9,794,043. bales, this works out to a crop of 11,748 0 bales, which is within 325,000 ales on the basis of the acreage and monthly con ditions to the end of September, namely, 11,426,857 bale. The ri e in Sterling ha stopped business in Indian Yarn for the time being to a great extent, that is, from first hands, as the Native hold rs are supplying the wants of huyers at easier rates. Japans Spinnings, however, aro maintaining their values in view of the present light stocks. Full supplies of these have been contracted for delivery up to May next. Spinners are kampe ed by the difficulty in get ting suit ble supplies of Native Cotton, It is reported that during the recent spell of cold weather large quantities were so badly watered that the baies frooze hard and much had to be rejected, The dealers are still nibbling round, picking up what little lots they can lay hold of at comparatively cheap prices. They ro not getting much encouragement from consumers, however, and several parcels bought for clearance this year will have to be held over it is thought, The Ningpo trade is disappointing and some an- xiety is felt reg rding the immediate future owing to losses custa ned by the farmers through a catt'e disease that has destroyed large numbers of buffalos during the last month, and which will greatly impede their agricultural pursuits. chief inquiry seems to be for T-Cloths and Jeans, but it is difficult to get reasonable price offered. We u derstand, however, that some business his gone through. The excessive quant ties put up at this morning's Auction has had a depressing effect on the market and pri es have suffered ac- cordingly. There are very few redeeming features about the sales, as will be noticed by reference to the particulars below. The small lots of Woollens do not show any encouraging results.
