THE GOVERNOR'S BALL.

The ball given by H. E. the Governor in honour of the King's Birthday took place last night, and was the brilliant success that it always is. As the opening of the social season it is invested with a special interest which was manifested last night when there was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen. Govern- ment House was transformed for the nonce. The grounds looked like fairyland, Chinese lan- terns hanging from the trees, while the lawns were aglow with electric bulbs. Crimson cloth covered the approach to Government House and was laid all the way up to the entrance to the ballroom, while pot plants helped to render still more beautiful the fine hall. The ballroom itself was ablaze with lights, which were reflected in the polished floor and in the windows, through which could be seen the rich colour effects given by the lavish display of bunt- ing on the verandahs. At the top of the room was a large beautiful palm surrounded by smaller ones and other plants, while the musicians, accommodated in a recess, were embowered in palms. The new ballroom staircase, which was completed about a month ago, was used for the first time, and convenience it afforded gave better approach to the supper below. Its steps were covered with crimson cloth, and the lawns were laid with matting. Out here were placed two marquees, one to relieve the congestion of guests at the supper table proper; and the other was used as a bar. The supper room itself was beautifully lighted and the tables were laid in a manner which delighted the eye. Adjacent to the ballroom were a card room and the usual retiring rooms, while a buffet was placed in the dining room. The scheme of decoration reflected creditably on Mr. Tutcher and his botanical staff, and the Public Works Department deserve praise for their share of the work.

the
