THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND

Fong sale there were very few exceptions, but. White Shirtings were decidedly irregular, as well as Irishes. T-Cloths and Jeans were but poorly represented. Turkey Reds are selling i regularly, 6-lbs. being in most request. Fast Black Italians have shown some slight irregularities, but on the average are decidedly firm, as also Venetians, while old stock lots of Coloured Lastings and Italians have steadily improved. Woollen goods generally are realising rather firmer prices.

PIECE GOODS.

Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 19th Nov., 1909, state:-- The reduction in the Auction offerings of Grey and White goods that was inaugurated last week is, according to Mail advices, to be kept up for the next three months, at all events suppliers in Manchester having received instructions to reduce their shipments by one half, so we are credibly informed. This week the quantity was on y 13.785 pieces, and although on the whole there was an improvement in prices it is disappointing to see, especially in White Shirtings, that previous rates where not fully maintained, not- withstanding they are still much below replacing cost. This certainly looks as tnough prices here have about reached the limit, at all events for the present, and until the country is in a better position financia ly, as, according to recent home advices, seems to be fully understood in Man- chester, the position being thus described in the "Guardian": "Cotton in America is too dear for the Liverpool merchant; the price asked by the Liverp ol merchant is too dear for the Spinner and the Yara of the Spinner is too dear for the Manufacturer; the Manchester price for cloth is too high for the Merchant in Calcutta and Shanghai, and each link in the chain com- plains of a small and unremunerative business. Unfortunately it is also true that this state of things is not new, but has been going on for some time without, apparently, any proable early remedy. A haud to mouth business goes on, but there is no active trade. and each link in the chain holds out desperately for an extreme price, t› mitigate, as he says, his loss. Such a position is extremely un-ati-fact-- but

Ty, it is not not yet clear how it is to be set right.” The Manchester market is in much the sme condition as quoted above, the only business possible being in small lots of Fancy goods of more or less special makes the trade in staples being quite at a stand-still so far as this marken is concerned. Cotton in Liverpool has been subject to some slight fluctuations, Mid-Americat coming to-day 7,82d., an advance from ye-ter- day, when futures

1

were quoted 7.60d. for February/March options. Egyptian has advanced to 113d. The Expo t figures are steadily diminishing, being only 7 million yards of Plain Cottons for the first half of this month. regards the New York market we have not heard of any fresh quotations fot Piece, Goods, while fr Cotton they are rather straggling-Ye-terday. January was quoted 14.72 cents and March 14.98 cents, and to-day December option comes 14.57 cents. A good demand continues fr all yarns and business seems only to be limited by the high prices wanted by Importers and Spinners. Clearances are quite good. Native Cotton is strong and advancing under the brisk demand both for export and local spinning. The Ewo Auction yesterday showed firmer prices for almost
