THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND
HONGKONG--Mr. P. Eduljee, in his Report dated 12th Oov., states:-The high prices now asked for Indian spinnings is turning the attention of dealers to other imported and local threads, and the aggregate business of the past fortnight is even smaller than during the previous qwo weeks, Demand is also much checked by the consider- ation of clearance before China New Year. Hol- ders, however, having in view the condition of the Bombay market and the higher cost of import- ations, are not anxious sellers, and although prices here and these show some variation we make no alteration in our quotations, which in the absence of any material business may be considered the more or less nominal, Receipts during the inter- val have exceeded the offtake, stocks showing a small increase on last estimate. The market closes quiet. Fombay continues strong with little or no business passing for China, where prices rule much below replacing cost. Sales of the interval aggregate 2275 bales; arrival- amount to 9,412 bales; unsold stock estimated at 19,000, and sold but uncleared yarn in sec nd hands at 30,000 bales, Local Manufacture:-No business is reported. Japanese Yarn:-Quiet throughout. Raw Ctton:-There has been no movement in Indian descriptions and with the exception of a parcel of 150 bales old Bengal the market is here stock. In China kinds some 80 bales New Troongchow are reported to have changed hands at $371, leaving 50 bales in stock. Quonations are Indian $30 to $35 China $33 to 38. Exchange on India has remained almost steady and closes to-day at Rs. 1291 for T/T and Rs. 1294 Post. On Shanghai 7 and on Japan 841, The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai during the fornight ended the 6th inst., viz:-Indian High prices check consumpti n. Total sales about 4,500 ba'es with an estimated stock of 48,000 bales, firm. Japanese -In fair enquiry at somewhat firmer rats. Sales about 1,500 bales on the basis of Tls. 1054 to 1134 for No. 16s. and Tls. 117 te 121 for No. 20:. Local:- Nos. 12s, and 14s, are in good demand. Total sales about 2,000 bales at Tls, 105 to 104 for No. 14s, and 't ls. 107 for No. 168.

Messrs. Noul, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 5th Nov., 1909, state:- There is no change in the market since our last, in fact the wet weather and Race holidays com- bined have practically put a stop to everything in this department of the trade. Through the continued advance in Cotton all forward busi- ness is quite impracticable, and yet holders of stock. bere find it impossible to obtain any ade- quate offers for the goods they have on hand. Many firms are advised by their home friends not to sell Manchester goods, while holders of American makes have had offers from New York to buy back, and we understand some have actually been shipped. This should certainly Spanish Stripes--Sundry chops serve to strengthen the market, though the prin- cipal native holders declare they find it almost impossible to raise their prices more than a candareen or two at a time, and then for the veriest retail quantities. There is a small inquiry all the time for American goods, and two or three hundrel bales are changing hands amongst the natives every day, but prices are a long way below what Importers will accept. And this with a difference in Exchange and Cotton of fully 83% against the Importer within the five weeks! There is nothing fresh to report as yet regarding the outside markets, though it is feared some damage may have been done to the partially harvested crops, through the heavy rains of the last few days. Newchwang and Tientsin dealers are buying here quietly, chiefly American goods and Cotton Yarn, but although full rates are being paid for these latter it is mot difficult to get any advance on the woven goods. The River markets are draving their supplies for the most part from the Auctions, the clearances thence The being quite satisfactory on the whole. Manchester market is being dominated by the price of American Cotton, which appears to have been affected during the last few weeks by specula- tors operating on the New York market. Judging by the quotations for “futures" high prices are now assured for the est of the season and Manu- facturers are badly left. According to the latest Mail advices it was fully expected that prices would give way before long and spinners were awaiting the decline before buying. An idea can be formed of the present position by a recent quotation for a favourite cloth on this market making it the equivalent of Tls. 3.40, whereas the last sale price hele was in the neighb urhood of TI:. 2.80 The test Liverpool quotations for Mid. American are 7.95d. spot" and 7.830.

ebruary/March option, while Egyptian is quoted a penny up since last week, namely 11d. The Export from Lancashire last month of Plain Cot- tons to Hongkong and China was 23,000.000, yards. against 25,000,000 yards the same month last year.
The New York market is very strong, and as mentioned »hove overtures are being made to e-purchase goods on this market. The Cotton quotations received on the 2nd inst. were 14.29 cents for January and 15.06 cents for March, while this morning 14.99 cents comes, for December. The Yarn Market has resumed its activity again, operators being unable to withstand the firmness of Importer of Indian Spinnings, in whose hands the bulk of the stock is now. A further advance is established with a more general demand. Bom- bay is firm, with a small business doing for November/December shipment at well maintained HONGKONG, 12th November: The above muoted prices. Japanese and Local Yarns are also firmer, is at a standstill and prices remain as last quoted. though business is rather more limited. Cotton is tending upwards. The Ewo and Yuen Fong Auctions have taken place as usual and on the whole have shown rather more firmness, especially the latter. Grey Shirtings, with 1erhaps the exception of 12-lbs, and 141-lbs. have all improved somewhat. White Shirtings und Irishes realised distinctly better prices all round, and T. Cloths and Jeans were both firmer. Turkey Reds were all firmer at the ie Kee sale, but this morning some what irregular prices were paid, though higher on the whole. Fast Black Italians and Venetians have sold at steady to firm prices. Woollens have kept fairly steady,
