The annual aquatic sports meeting of the Victoria Recreation Club for 1909, opened

This event, which was open to the army, on the 23rd inst., and to be continued 24th and 25th, is a memorable one, for it marks all soldiers. The race from the start

navy and police, brought forward four starters, the first occasion on which an interport swimming between Burch and Burke, the pair soon out team has visited the Colony. The opening took distancing Morrish and Harris. The last place under most auspicious circumstances. The length was a willing one, Burch at times head weather was all that could be desired, the heating Burke and vice versa, until the race ended of the sun being tempered by a light screen of in Burch's favour by a touch. clouds, while the swimmers were favoured with a slack tide and water upon which there was scarcely a ripple. Mr. C. Lesbirel, the V.R.C. steward, had supervised the decoration of the Club House with flags, and had also made the most of the space available for the accommoda-

tion of spectators by the erection of galleries. In addition to these a lighter had been made fast alongside the bath, and while it enclosed the bath it afforded ample sitting accommoda- tion. The officials were kept busy throughout the day, the excellent handicapping in the local events being responsible for some very close finishes, which necessita- ted the judges keeping their eyes very wide

The sport throughout was excellent, and the large attendance of spec- tators boisterously manifested its appreciation of the many gallant bids for honours. It goes without saying that the centred in the interport championships. The greatest interest hundred yards, however, proved a much easier thing for Hongkong than was anticipated, both Humphreys and Claxton beating the Shanghai representatives, McCabe and Prince. Hum phreys won by a comfortable margin, while Claxton succeeded in snatching second place from McCabe by a touch. Shanghai scored, however, in the half-mile, when McCabe de- feated Cooke by some four lengths. The Shanghai man is a powerful swimmer, and swam throughout the race with the same easy overarm stroke which carried Thomas to victory two years in succession in the harbour swim The three cheers raised to the winner were

thoroughly well deserved. The only stumbling block in the day's programme proved the high diving competition, and in this an impasse was reached as the judges, Mr. G. A. Caldwell (Hongkong) and Mr. P. Fowler (Shanghai). could not agree. It appears that while the "swallow'dive is the one in general use in the Colony, the Shanghai swimmers follow the rules

the Amateur Swimming Association, and while the local judge was in favour of giving first place to a local man, the judge for Shang: hai held out for first place for a Shanghai competitor.

The competitors got away with a good start, Humphreys and Prince being slightly in the lead of the other two. Humphreys was the first to turn, being closely followed by Prince, but the pace was too warm for the Shanghailander, and he gradually yielded second place to Claxton. In the third and last length McCabe overhauled the leaders inch by inch, but the end of the race was too near and the distance between him and them too great. Humphreys won by a length

this event, and it may have been that fact which The unlucky number of thirteen entered for brought about a deadlock. The differences in the methods of diving at Hongkong and in the variance, and they could not come to a decision Northern port kept the interport judges at as to the awards. Seeing that the styles of diving at Shanghai and Hongkong are so representatives to ask them to compete in a different, it would be obviously unfair to either competition which is entirely novel to them consequently the suggestion that the competitors should try again is one that is not likely to be attended with success.

SECOND DAY'S SPORT.

interesting aquatic meeting promoted by the Success attended the second day of the most

V. R. C. The sport was of the same high order as on the opening day. Some noteworthy achievements were recorded, and with close finishes, accentuated by the feeling of inter- port rivalry, the spectators found the exhibi- tion all that they could desire. There was no diminution in the attendance or in the interest manifested. The crowd on the lighter while the usual number who get enjoyment out and on the club premises was as large as before,

of the proceedings from the Praya were in evidence. An improvement in the seating_ac- commodation was effected.

.

When half of yesterday's programme had been covered, interport honours were not look- ing over bright for Shanghai, the first and second in the plunging championship, and the they held three interport events to the one team race, having fallen to Hongkong. Thus secured by Shanghai, while the result of the high diving competition was still unsettled. But the last four items on the programme, two of which were interport, saw honours even, for. thanks to McCabe's skill, both fell to Shanghai. The result of to-day's interport events will decide which team shall take premier position—” Hongkong or Shanghai.

HURDLE RACE.

A good entry was received for this event. The distance was two lengths over four hurdles, the first in each heat to swim in the final.

FIRST HEAT: J. M. R. Pereira, receiving four seconds, 1. Time-49 secs.

SECOND HEAT: R. C. Witchell, scratch 1. Time-46 sec. Witchell was not seriously challenged by his two rivals, Yvanovich and Barros.

THIRD HEAT: F. L. Roza, receiving 5 sec.,. 1. Time-50-4/5 secs. A good struggle between Petersen and Koza, with H. C. Sayer going strong.

FOURTH HEAT: A. J.V. Ribeiro, receiving four seconds, 1. Time-53/1-5 secs. Looked a dead heat almost with Carroll, but Ribeiro

obtained the verdict.
