Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Good Report, dated Shanghai 30th July, 1909, state:-- There is no change to report in our market, the business doing being simply from hand to mouth. The offers made are for most part three to five per cent. below the ideas of Importers, and that does not mean replacing cost which is considerably more. There seems to be a lull in the enquiry from all of our dependencies, which in the case of Hankow is quite easily accounts for owing to the continued fear of floods, although the water in the Kivor did subside a little from its highest. The danger however, cannot be considered over until well ou to the end of August. The larger holders are certainly showing more firmness, seeing the impossibility there is of coming any where near replacing cost. This is to some extent giving a chance to the smaller firms to quit their stocks, but it is quite impossible to find out any particu- lars. There is some demand for 84-lbs. Grey Shirtings and also White Shirtings and a few smal: parcels have been placed for prompt clear-
Kobe, 15th July. - Cotton.-American.—Quota- tions have been on a steady rise since our list report. This is due to the wet season which is being experienced over the Cotton districts, com- bined with official crop report given at 74.0, being mach below the figure generally anticipated Latest quotat on of forward Middling is Y. 41,40, "Spot" is n minal at Y. 38.50. Indian.- In view of the scarcity of stocks in the market, and in sympathy with high rates ruling for American Cottor, prices have been maintained with upward tendency in consequence of which no business of importane has transpired. "Spot is likewise on a rise, but owing to small stocks business has been very restricted. Broach is que ted at Y. 31.50; Akola at Y. 30.00; Bengal at Y. 29.50. Chinese. It is reported that the Lew crop has suffered some damage by reason of continued wet weather. Stocks in the home market are small. Those facts combined with high prices of Ameri- can Cotton, have caused price to advance. Business has been small. Prices are: "Best" Y Shirtings. The severe advance in Cotton stands in the way if any busines of importance for for- ward arrival. A god deal more could be booked were Importera only as liberal minded now as they used to be, but it is a case of "once hitten twice shy," and holders prefer to keep their goods and run their own chance of an improved maket later on. The runs in Manchuria seem to have caused a lul in the demand from that quarter, as there are scarcely any resales even reported, what there are

quite a retail character. The home wein to be in a helpless state, Manufac- wuting prices it is impossible to touch for stapl goods, and yet in spite of all the talk of shutting down the Mills if buyers do not improve on their offers, heavy shipments are still being made. The speculative fluctuations in Cotton are alt gether disquieting. A week or two ago 7d. and inore was expected, it has since been well inside 6d, and is now quoted 6,541, for Mid American in Liverpool. In New York prices have been all over the place. Yesterday 12 18 cents was wired as the quotation for October option, to-day it comes 12 32 cents. This is reflected in the market for Piece Goods. The latest quotation for Pepperell Drills being 123. 3d,, and 10s. 7d. for 3 25 yards Sheetings. Most firms consider it waste of money telegraphing under present cir- cumstance The last fortnightly telegraphic. advice of the shipments from Manchester of Plain Cotton was 19 million yards, so they still continue The activity in the Yarn market very excessive. this week came quite as a surprise, but shows that holders were fully justified in taking up the firm attitude they did in spite of the very discouraging outlook there was. Stocks of Indian Spinnings are fairly heavy now, which may make it difficult to maintain prices during the dull Season. Japanese Spinnings are responding very slowly to recent advances in Osaka. Although no details are published it is reported that some fresh sales of Local Yarn have been made, to the extent of 1.500 hales it is said, wile some 2,000 bales have been resold. We have gleaned scarcely anything in the way of fresh business, although we know a retail trade is passing. One sale of interest reported to us from flist hands is a fair line of 30

is now wanted. There is still a certain amount of indenting going on in special Fancies, a business that promi es to be over done again in the near future. The Auctions this week have not been 11 joy, the tendency for the staple makes of both Grey and White goods being distinctly easier. Neither have Turkey Reds shown up well, while prices seem to have favoured the buyers in Fast Black Cotton Italians in the majority of cases at this morning's sale.
