HONGKONG GYMKHANA CLUB.

CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.

The Gymkhana Club had a glorious afternoon for their second meeting at Happy Valley on May 29th; consequently the event was the most successful that the Club have experienced for some time. There was a large and representative attendance, which included His Excellency the Governor and party. The course was fast, and the racing good, many exciting finishes being witnessed. The amounts paid out by the Cash Sweeps were considerably in excess of previous payments at Gymkhanas. The inviting day attracted quite number of ladies to the course. where the Buffs Band, under the baton of Bandmaster Hewitt, considerably enlivened the proceedings with an admirable programme of music. tion. Ascending the incline the latter pony took premier position and Billy usurped second place. At the village bend killy was in the van, with Droschkengaul second and Birthday third. The order was the same entering the straight, Billy maintaining a long lead and pride of place until the finish. An excellent race for secoud place was witnessed between Birth- day and Droselkengaul, the ponies racing neck and neck until within a few lengths of the Judges box. There Birthday nearly stumbled, but the excellent horsemanship of the Hon. Mr. Gresson averted what might have proved a serious accident, and although thrown out of his stride Birthday succeeded in gaining second place by a head. Time- min. 3 sec.

The order was the same until the village was neared, when the rear ponies closed up. Passing the village Butcher drew level with Seraph and passed ou to join Tamar, while Lyemun and Highland Heather also came to the front. At the entrance to the straight Lyemun gained considerably on the leaders, Highland Heather likewise pulling up. In the home run Butcher responded gamely to his jockey's persuasions, and passed the winning post an easy winner. Lyeman was second home, with Highland Heather a good third. Time.-1 min. 18-2/5 secs. The Pari Mutuel paid a dividend of $11.60. while payments by the Cash sweeps were $283.50 on the first pony; 81 on the second and $40.50 on the third. WELTER RACE HALF A MILE.-For all China pony hacks or polo ponies. To be ridden by owners pony to have been property of rider for at least one month prior to date of entry, Catch weights 12 stones. Non- winning subscription griffins allowed, 5lbs, Jockeys who have not won more than two official races in Hongkong, Shanghai or Tientsin allowed 5lbs. A cup' called the Gymkhana Cup will be presented at the end of the season to be won by the pony scoring most marks in the races for the Gymkhana Stakes at the gymkhana meetings during the season, counting 4 points for a first; 2 for a second; and 1 for a third. The benefit of marks already scored to pass with the pony on a sale. Any winner of the race to carry 5lbs extra for each win in subsequent starts for the race. but in the event of a pony carrying the penalty not winning, 2lbs. to be deducted next time he starts, such 2lbs, to remain deducted until he wins again when he will carry the full penalties without deduction. A dropped spear disqualifies the team for the run concerned.

Note-Style means the proper and work- manlike handing of spears and the synchronous working of a team. Points will be deducted from a team should the judge observe any member carrying his spear in a dangerous and unsports- manlike manner.

The judges will deduct points if in their opinion a team be moving at too slow a space,

creased his lead past Bowrington, Tamar draw- ing into second place. Up the incline Swan had a big lead, but the remainder of the field bunched near the rock and drew up with the leader. Kamranlı was the first to emerge, while Tamar aud Greyback ran in second place. Kamranh was still foremost when the straight was entered, Greyback being a good second. n exciting race home followed, Grayback challenging the Admiral's pony and winning by nearly a length, while Theodolite, who was the only pony left at the start came up the straight at a great pace and succeeded in snatching third place from Tamar. Time-2 min. 11 secs.

The dividend paid by the Pari Mutuel was 89.30. while Cash Sweep payments were: lat 8544.95; 2nd, 155.70; 3rd, $77.85.
