THE DECLINE IN TRADE.
Evidence that the general complaint of poor trade is well-founded is supplied by the quar terly returns of the Imperial Maritime Customs. The dues and revenues collected at the Chinese ports in the first quarter of the year showed a decline of about 36,000 taels as compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. The amount for the second quarter was about 816,C03 taels less than the sum collected in the corres- ponding quarter last year.
The collections for the second quarter were as follows:-

MACAO'S REVENUE AND ADMINISTRATION. The two largest sources of our Colony's in- come are derived from opfum and fan-tan. From the former we gain some $400,000 a year, and from the latter about the same amount. I do not know whether the Government have ever thought how, when the revenue derived from the opium traffic disappears, they will make up this sam. A substantial amount is derived from fan tan, but it is doubtful whether this will continue a permanent source of
revenue.
There are other monopolias granted by Government, but they are soaroely worth mentioning. The Santa Casa Lottery is not likely to have a long run, as the tickets are now offered at $9. Truly the finansial out- look of Macao is not a bright one.
It is a pleasure to be able to state that the administration of the Colony is now in the hands of a olever and prudent man, and in our new Governor, Senhor Regada, we have an administrator who has already shown his sympathy with the aims of residents tɔ improve the condition of the Colony. In view of the fact that a new commercial city is springing up on the West River, it is to be hoped also that His Excellency will induce the Fazenda to 221.711,021 | modify industrial and house taxes. Many of 52,402.298 the businesses here are at a standstill owing to 1,024,063.771 the treatment meted out by the Fax nda to local 178,130.526 merchants, who in many Instances have had to 291,752 404 pay heavy fines. Many. I am sorry to say, have 74,814 911 left the Colony to settle in places where
squeeze " is not so prevalent.

THE PROMENADE CONCERT.
A very successful promenade concert was held on the Volunteer Parade Ground on Saturday evening. The weather was all that could be desired and the Parade Ground was tastefully decorated with lanterns and bunting, and presented aite an animated appearance, The programme was not a lengthy one, but what there was of it was distinctly good, and the even. 94 001.811 ing was productive of one or two surprises, show- 21862.539 ing that Hongkong is by no means devoid of 204,022,215 local talent. Mr. and Mrs. G. 4. Edwards, who are 381.50 106 well known favourites, contributed several items 786.696.411 with their usual ability and were deservedly 27.238.598 encored. Messrs. Benedetto and Ivan Caryl 45,688,596 gave a couple of humorous sons in really 111,9 5.524 exoellent style, and Lieut. R. M. Croes kept 4,718 131 the audience in the best of spirits by his clever 63,134 910 impersonations. The surprise of the evening 29,576.460 was provided by the Misses Both whose rendering of La Serenats" was given in a charming manner and dreated quite an impression. their voices were most tuneful and blended beautifully, and their efforts were well worthy the ovation accorded them. Mesara, P. W. Goldring, another favourite at these concerts, met with considerable soolamation, and last, but by no means least, the band of the 3rd Middlesex were available Regiment, whose services

LAUNCH AT KOWLOON DOCKS,
On September 10th a cruiser built to the order of the Chiness Imperial Government for patrol duty on the West River was launched from the Kowloon Dooks. Mrs Stokes, wife of Rear Admiral Stokes, christened the vessel “ Klang Ta" as she left the weighs with steam up, and as the cruiser took the water the usual salvo of crackers rang out. Commodore Lin, represent- ing Admiral Di Chan was present,” usual complimentary speeches were made and Mr. Mitchell presented Mrs. Stokes with a gold bangle as a memento of the occasion,
