SILK.
YOKOHAMA, 81st August-During the period since the 17th instant a good business has been done in raw silk at steady and in some instances at slightly higher prices than last quoted. At the close things are again easier. The stock of waste silk is gradually increasing, and the market is slightly easier. A certain quantity of Waste hat been taken by Native Mills, but for export transactions are very small. The excess of ship- mente over settlements is accounted for by stocks held over from last season by foreign exporters.

HONGKONG SHARE QUOTATIONS.
HONGKONG, 11th September, 1908.-During the past week there has been a decided improve- ment in demand for many of our most favoured investment securities, and rates in many cases have advanced. Business on the whole also shows on improvement, but the volume is restricted by the reluctance of holders to meet the ideas of intending purchasers. Barzilvers in London is now quoted at 2311d., and Sterling T.T. at 1/94. The T.T. rate on Shanghai has advanced to 751.
BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais under an unsatisfied demand have advanced rapidly from 8750 to $7824, with small sales at those and intermediate rates and close in strong demand at the higher quotation. London has also improved and is now quoted at £80. Nationals continge in request at $51 but with- out busines1.
MARINE INSURANCES.—Unions have been done at $755, and can now be placed at the improved rate of $760. There are buyers of North Chinas at Tls. 80, and of China Traders at 1861. Yangtassa and Cantons are unchanged and no business has been transaoted.
FIBE INSURANCES.-Hongkong have ad- vanced without sales to $3171⁄2 bayers and Coinas to $931 buyers after a small sale of the latter at $93.
SHIPPING.-Hongkong, Canton and Macnos are firmer with buyers at $271 after sales, at the rate. Indo-Chinas, China and Manilas and: Douglas s are neglected at quotations, and it is probable that the latter could be obtained at less Than the quoted rate. Star Ferries (old) have been booked st $241, and (new) at $15, the latter closing in further request. Shell Trans- porta continue in request at 448, but no shares appear available at the figure.
REFINERING. —Quotations are unchanged and. we have no business to report.

this rate. Ühinese Engineerings can be placed - at the improved rate of Tla, 164.
DOCKS, WHARyes and Godowns.—Hong!} kong and Whampoa Docks are again somewhatis easier, and oan now be procured at $96. loon Wharves have still further improved after sales at $48 and $48, are in further des at the higher rate. New Amoy Docks, and
