An unusual incident was witnessed on board H.M.S."Kent" on April 7th. A Chinese con- tractor had been employed to polish and renovată the furniture and to do other work on the ship the day in question Wu was leaving his work and one of his hands was named Wd Oɑ. On at half past twelve, considerably before the re- cognised time, and his master remonstrated with him. Wu became angry and seizing a hammer attempted to strike his master. The latter, however, succeeded in wresting it from him, whereupon the enraged workman rashed to the side of the ship and drew a bayonet from a bayonet rack. He unsheathed it and made a lunge at Ng, who would in all pro babilly have received the weapon in his body had it not been for the timely arrival of a marine from the upper deck who took in the situation at a glance and came to the assistance of the contractor. Ha seized the man and banded hin over to the police. He was brought before Mr. Kemp at the Magistracy yesterday and was sentenced to six weeks' hard labour.

THE BOYCOTT.

A boycott that is not a boycott is undoubtedly belog conducted by the Chinese in Hongkong against Japanese and Japanese products. In other words concerted action is being taken by some of the Chines to show their disapproval of the Japanese attitude on the "Tatșu Maru " incident but the action is in such a form that it does not constitute a breach of the law. The resentment against the Japanese is not confined to a few iresponsibles as was at first thought, but on the other hand it is far from unanimous, Of course, there are many Chinese who do not express themselves very freely on the subject but that does not indicate that there is no agitatio or feeling against the Japanese. As

matter of fact in nearly every shop in Queen's Road will be found a notice to the effect that Japanese goods are not kept in stock or that they cannot be purchased there, and one man is reported to have collected his stook of A Japanese in Kobe bewails the corruption of Japanese goods and dumped them in the har- his young fellow countryman by the pernicious bour. When it is sated that all the Chinese firms in the guild, with the exception of three, have approved of this proceeding, it will be seen how widespread is the feeling.

The agitation among the Chinese against the Japanese still continues, and each day brings reports of various trades joining the movement. The porcelain firms are the latest to meet and pass a resolution joining the boycott. The native press have, we understand, been warned by the Hongkong Government through the Registrar General to be careful in what they say with reference to the boycott.
