DEATH OF MR. A. SHEWAN.

It is with deep regret that we have to record the death, at the age of fifty-four, of Mr. Arthur hewan, an old and esteemed resident of Shanghai, who died at the General Hospital on ! March 1b. He had been in hospital for s period of three months, suffering from an attack of pleurisy, but had litely showed eigns of recovery and his numerous friends in the Settle- mant had expected to see him fit and well at an early date. Early that morning, however, in turning over in bed a vernel of the beart was ruptured and he died peacefully in bis sloop. Mr. Showan came out to China about thirty. three years ago and joined the firm of Turner & o, as tea-tastor. After several years' service with that firm, he became associated with the firm of Showau & Co., of which his brother, the Hoa. Robert Shewan. was senior partner. Later be became one of the partners of Greaves and Co, whose firm name is now Gedde and Co, and about six years ago relinquished his Interest in that basiness and became a share- broker. Mr Shewan was always a konn sports- A cricketer himself, he always took great interest in the gym», and was also an owner of raceponies and an old and prominent member of the Shanghai Race Club.—N.-C.
