A member of the police force who deserted about twelve months ago, was arrested in Hongkong last week. During his absence he Lad been employed in the Chinese Customs, and apparently had come to Hongkong for a 416 | trip. A warrant was out for the arrest of ex- constable Norman in connection with a sum of about $400 which was not paid to the compradore of the Water Police mess while Norman was in .418 | charge of the mess. Information has reached here that the Sainam, while on her journey last Wednesday from Canton to Wuchow, went ashore near the 420 Ling Yang gorge. A hole has been knocked in her port side and her cargo has been seriously damaged by water. In order to discourage the fashion amongst the student classes of putting on foreign clothes the Chinese Ministry of Education recently issued an order prohibiting all students in the government schools and colleges from dressing in that way. In consequence of the in- conveniences attendant. to going through gymnastic exercises whilst dressed in nativa clothes, the Ministry of Education has rescinded the prohibitory order, only as far as gymoastios are concerned, but orders that all such foreiga- style clothes must be made solely of native manufactured cloth, no foreign manufactures being permitted.

Papal Nuncio to reside in Peking, and that a Chinese Cardinal be appointed by the Pope to be the head of the Chinese Roman Catholic: Church, who shall control all matters relating to that Church in this Empire. The ultimate object of these suggestions is the perfecting of amicable and cardial intercourse between con. verts and non-converts subjects of His Imperial Majesty the Emperor.

Mr. Daniel Talbot, late walking ganger on the works at the south face of the Kowloon- Canton Railway, died suddenly in the Govern- ment Civil Hospital on June 17th after a brief illness. Deceased was brought to Hongkong on account of his long experience with railway work, and was about to re-start operations on the north face of the tunnel when he became ill. He was a great favourite with the railway employees, and others who knew him in Hongxong, who will hear the news of his untimely and with regret. The remain« were interred in the Happy Valley Cemetery next afternoon, many of his mates on the railway following the cor:ège.

There is short'y to be formed a motor bus service for Singapore, the route being from Johnston's Pier to the Botanical Garden“.. Messrs. Wearme and Co, are the promoters of the project, and intend to have a continuous service with three cars on the road. The largest vehicle employed will be one of Dougill and Company's Frick motor char-à bancs, to seat 18 passengers, the chief feature of which is the one lever driving. The car can be regulated from dead low to top speeds by the manipulation of a single lever. It is understood that the journey fr. m Johnston's Pier will be divided into three fares of ten cents apiece, and there can ba little doubt that among a certain class of residents this unique mode of travel to and from town will b-conie popular.

A the Marine Magistrate's Court on June 21 Commander Basil Taylor, R.N.. convict d F. Johnson, doukeyman, M. Manwaring, J. Cronin, and A. Thern, firemen, belonging to the s.s. Cronin and Ibern returned during the night and created a disturbance. Thern fell overboard and wanted to fight those who rescued him.
