quotation for that cloth in New York is 138.-91. Sheetings are still changing hands amongst the natives and there is now a little enquiry for 3.50 and 4 yard makes, but the offers made are very inadequate. As regards Fancy Goods we hear some Prints have been taken from stock, and a small indent business in odds and ends is go- ing through, but on quite a retail scale. | Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, dated Shanghai, Goatskins, untanned, chiefly white color
14th January, 1906, states:-The short interval since our last was written has done little more than confirm the impression that was gaining ground amongst importers that the long spell of depression this market has been suffering from is showing signs of breaking. The chief evidence of this is, of course, an improvement in clear- ances, the dealers having quite sufficient on hand of goods already booked and indented for to meet most requirements, without having to purchase fresh supplies from the import houses. They are anxious, however, to find out what goods are available, which has led to free enquiries all round, and that is as far as they have got as yet. There are buyers from the country here with money ready to invest in cheap goods, but they must be bargains, so first hand holders prefer to wait until the market opens after China New Year. They may be right, but there is no saying what the country markets may be like in a few months time, if some stringent measures are not adopted to check at once the tampering that is still going on with the popular currency, Copper Cash. This is well illustrated in a letter from the Hupeh correspondent of one of the local papers who writes:-Despite the ups and downs of the raw staple the Manchester market keeps uniformly strong. Cotton in Liverpool declined to 6.134. for Mid-American, which was rather anticipated, the New York quotation coming 11.57 cents almost immediately after our last report was printed No. further advices have been received, though it is rumoured, from Japanese sources, that a fresh official estimate of the crop is now stated to be 9,718,000 bales. Egyptian Cotton remains steady at 8rd The New York market is still very strong, and quotations are looked upon as danger. ously high, but nevertheless some purchase,
