SILK.
CANTON, 27th August, 1904. Fifth Crop.-The weather is now very favourable, and prospects are so far promising for the 5th crop as to quality. The quantity will be rather reduced, owing to the scarcity of mulberry leaves, the cost of which has risen from $1.00 to $3.50 per picul. Long- reels. The gradual fall in Exchange has made transactions easier: and the fortnight under review has been very active. But the prices asked for 4th crop Silk are so high, that they begin to check the business. Fine sizes are in good demand, but they are very scarce and exceedingly dear. Natives 11/13-13/15-14/18, continue to be the favourite article. From sales made we quote:-Wing Cheong Sing 11/13 at $895 (in 4th crop), and in 3rd crop; On Wo Hing 11/13 at $795; Kwong Seng 18/15 and Mee Kee 13/15 at $780; Miu Lun On 18/22 at $695; Boey Wo Cheong 11/13-13/15-14/18 at $737); Yee Wo Hing 16/20, 18/22 and 30/40 nt $885, $680 and $625 respectively. Short-reels. The advance has continued in all grades, especially in crack chops. The large demand from New York has nearly exhausted the stocks in 2nd and 3rd crops, and big contracts has been booked for 4th crop at very high price. Waste Silk.-There has been more enquiry from the home markets, but still at very low limits. The holders are firmer in their views, and not disposed to sell as freely as before, expect for "Market extra unopened" stock of which is very heavy.

The export of dust has been 359,327 lbs. toting in only small transactions, owing to our Great Britain and 42,800 lbs. to Russian Man- churia; while the export of brick tea has been 2,305,466 to Europe and 3,592,277 lbs. to Russian Manchuria.
Freights have been 45/- per ton of 40 c. ft. to London; and 30/- to New York via Suez,
The feature of the market is the enormous increase in the export to Great Britain--24 mil. lions lbs. of black tea this season compared with six millions last season; to other European ports 19 millions lbs, as compared with two millions last season, while the exports direct to Russia have shrunk from 12 millions to less than one million, and a similar falling off is of course shown in the export to Russian Manchuria.

COAL.
A very large stock of Japanese coal has 8C- cumulated at Shanghai in consequence of the low freight ruling recently when natives took advant- age to import their requirements. Quotations for Cardiff have appreciated for reasons which are not apparent, as there is nt present small inquiry for it.
Messrs. Hughes and Hough, in their coal report of to-day's date, state that five steamers are ex- pected at Hongkong with a total of 11,500 tons of Japan coal and 2,150 tons of Bongay. All bas been sold. Since 26th August 18,000 tons of Japan Coal, 1,000 tons of Cardiff, and 3,000 tons of Honguy have arrived, all sold. The market is dull with small sales of Japanons. Quotations :-
