ૐ C. Above the stables in the loug red building to 62,347.12 the south of the Grand Stand apartments were 35,150.24 42,380.91 laid out as follows:-Hongkong Jockey Club 4,528.36 (Hongkong Club down stairs). Mr. H. N Mody, 371,110.48 the Hon. C. W. Dickson, Mr. J. R. M. Smith, the officers of the Sherwood Foresters, Messrs. E. 8. Whealler and E. W. Rutter, Mr. T. F. Hough, Messrs. A. Babington, J. H Lewis, and H. P. White; the German Club, the Waifong, Messrs. Hart Buck, and Henry Humphreys, Mr. G. C. C. Master, Mr. W. B. Dixon, and the officers of the Royal Navy. To describe the decorations individually of all these would take up too much space; they were all gay. there being no stint of bunting, greenery, and flowers. The numerous matsheds included dining rooms run by the Hongkong Hotel, the King Edward Hotel, and the Connaught. House Hotel.
The first race, the
Weng nei chong Stakes, brought out a field of 19 starters, A ding-doug race resulted in a win for Chautauqua, a horse owned by two of the American Chinese Development Co., who are connected with the new Fatshar Railway, Mr. Johnstone brought in Ca Canny second. The Maiden Stakes was won rather easily by Discovery, second place falling to Mr. Baxey's stable. In the Valley Stakes there were twenty starters, and the surprise of the day was the victory of Panjandrum, with the owner, Mr. Dowding, up. Disclosure was a good second.
In co nection with this race it may be mentioned that the winner had only one backer in the Pari-mutuel. It is said he backed it in mistake for another horse; he lifted the magui- ficent sum of over $1,200. In the Victoria Stakes The Pals' Huron, with Mr. Master up, got the best of a close finish, with Algerine second. For the Foochow Cup a field of seven walers entered. It was generally expected that the race would lie between Mr. Master's Remnant and Mr. Johnstone's Runaway Girl, who are jumped off in front, and maintained a lead from old competitors. So it turned out; they were the the field until entering the straight where, run. only two in the race. Remnant won by aning wide, Chautauqua got an opening on the length, Tho

half a length; Talbot a good fourth. Time, The race was never in doubt, Coronet Rose 59 3.5 secs. winning by a good six lengths. Chieftain won second place from Aladdiu by neck. The winner was led by the Owner amid the applause and congratulations of the assembly. Hongkong Club Cup was contested by eight horses. Mr. Burki.l brought in Polka just in front of Vancouver, with Rare Rose third. The Chinese Club Cup was won by Mr. A. V. Apcar's Manila with half a length to spare from Eclipse; Starling third. In the Lusitano Cup race an accident occurred, which happily was unattended by any very serious consequences. After passing the post for the first time Videlicet swerved across "the course, taking La France Rose also athwart the track, and both horses dashed through the outside boundary hedge, dismounting their riders. The race was won by Liberty Rose, with Rex second. In the Encouragement Stakes a good race was witnessed, Maréchal Niel Rose, a dark horse, coming in first, Ca Cauny second very close up.
2nd Starter -C. H. Ross, Esq. Handicapper.-Capt. F. W. Lyons. Timekeeper.-J. R. Michael, Esq. Hon. Treasurer.-R. T. Wright, Esq. Clerk of the Course.-T. F. Hough, Esq., Excellent weather favoured the opening of the Hongkong Jockey Club Race Meeting on Tuesday. The Happy Valley looked its best under brilliant sunshine which brought out the beauties of the surrounding verdant hills and flashed back from the innumerable banners and bunting that decked the pavilions on the Race- course. Long before the commencement of the day's sport the roads leading to Happy Valley bore streams of people eastwards. Europeans made their way to the course in all sorts of con- veyances-ricksha, chairs, gigs, and bicycles; while thousands of Chinese travelled on foot, beguiling the journey by occasional sojournings at the roadside stalls loaded with delicacies such as delight the Celestial heart, The Racecourse itself looked well. Since last Meeting the Jockey Club have carried cut extensive improvements that met with complimentary comment on all hands. Most noticeable of these is the band- some new building just inside the gates, erected for the accommodation of the Fari-mutual and the provision of additional stands. It was plea- sant to notice, too, the absence of an old acquain- tance, the unsightly nullah that formerly carried its turgid stream in front of the Grand Stand. Now this eyesore has been covered over, thus enhancing the appearance of the place and adding considerably to the area available for the promenade, besides allowing of an improve- ment in the Judges' Box and Press Enclosure. Above the Grand Stand was displayed the Red Ensign flanked by the Jockey Club flag.
Arrangements for laying money in the new building were very good. Entering, place. betting conveniences were to the left, winners to the right, a small booking-office being a8- signed to each starter. After backing whatever horse one fancied, an exit was found by means of the numerous side doors, there being but
