Under the auspices of the Odd Volumes Society, Rev. E. J. Hardy lectured on the 22nd inst. in the City Hall on "Chinese Manners." H.E. Major-General Villiers Hatton, C.B., presided over a large audience, including Mrs. May, Hon. Gershom Stewart and Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. Dickson, Hoo H. E. Pollock, and Colonel L. F. Brown, R.E. Rev. Mr. Hardy dealt with his subject in his customary entertaining, racy man- ner. He contrasted the manners of the East with those of the West, showing how their standards of civility and politeness differed essentially in many ways and making a plea to foreigners in China to show towards the lower classes of the Chinese that politeness of treatment which they got at the hands of the upper classes of their own countrymen. At the close, the lecturer got a hearty vote of thanks.

At about 2.55 a.m, on the 25th inst. another fire broke out, with what might have had disast- rous results. Starting at the 2nd floor of No 444, Des Voeux Road West, in a large, well- stocked mat-shop, the conflagration was soon under full way.
The alarm haring been given it was not long before the Fire Brigada was on the scene, under charge of Mr. Hallifax, Mr. | Macdonald, Chief Engineer, and the full s'aff being present. Considerable delay, however, | quotations:-
caused by the inability to obtain supply of water to play on the fl mes, and until the water was turned on the firemen could do but little more than remove property from the adjoining buildings which were threatened. In the meantime the fire spread unchecked to Nos. 446 on one side, and 442, 440, and 438 on the other, Nos. 144 and 446 being completely gutted, while the surrounding promises were consider ably damaged by the falling sparks, and the volumes of water, of which there was at last a plentiful supply. During the progress of this fire the outer wall of No. 438 collapsed suddenly, and fell crashing into Sai On Lane, nearly catching Inspector MoNab and Sergeants Grant and Watt in its fall, who most fortun- ately, however, just escaped with their lives, without sustaining further injuries than a slight
scorching, and somewhat damaged clothes.

YARN.
12
Feb. 26th, says: The market has but partially Mr. Eduljee, in his report, dated Hongkong
opened and the bulk of sales noted below may be placed under the category of "congratulatory purchases. Prices obtained, however, are very unsatisfactory, the recent gain in value of $6 per bale, alluded to in last report, having completely disappeared. Considering the wild excitement in Bombay consequent on the scarcity of raw cotton, the certainty of very restricted supplies, and the depletion of stocks, both here and in the country, the action of one or two weak holders in forcing sales at a heavy decline would appear to be too precipitate, as with a little patience they would have equally succeeded in placing their yarn with advantage, and without detriment to a healthy market. Under the circumstances prices consider- ably weakened, but soon rallied through the firmness of large importers, and the market closes firm with a strong demand for No. 10s and 123 at an advance of $1 to $2 per bale over the lowest. point of the fortnight.
Local Manufacture-The local mills are doing nothing; the cost of production at the present level of the raw material precluding business.
